There are really only a few types of suit set ups in Dust, though some are not so good because PG the lack of racial diversity
We really have 3 different slots for how you want to play, and a total of 11 things to put in them: Slot 1 (highs): Gank "tanking" Shield Tank
Slot 2 (low slots) "Speed/evasion" tanking Armor tanking Stealth/Intel tanking
Slot 3 (weapon) Short range 0-5m Medium range 5-50m Long range 50-110m Ultra long range 110m+
With these options, there are only so many fits that can be used. I honestly believe that since we don't have all the suits and weapons available that specialize in specific combinations of these fits, we cannot achieve true balance.
Taking a look at the old FOTM: brick-tanked callogi + AR, it was quite obvious that the fit to take over that would be a fit that could break through their tank- the gank and armor tanked gallogi with AR. Now, when one observes the weaknesses of that fit which are quite obvious: slow, low endurance, short-medium range, it becomes easy to predict the next FOTM. Already, scramblers on amarr suits are becoming obvious because they have high DPS, long range, and high endurance. They simply evasion tank and gank tank to break through the armor of the gallente. However, they are not the ideal fitting. The perfect counter is coming: evasion and shield-tanked Callogi with RR. With the ability to engage multiple targets past 73m and stay at that range, they will be the perfect counter as they can recover from the small hits the AR will inflict in under 6 seconds. A current counter to the current FOTM is a similarly fit mass driver callogi. All one has to do is stack shield extenders, regulators, and complex cardiac regulators. By using explosives, it nullifies any tank advantage that the gallogi has. Because the merc will constantly have to run away, the forgiveness of the mass driver will be a huge equalizer. I've been using it myself and tearing through swarms of gallogis like it's cool because all of the armor hives get destroyed and they must either run away, play as true logi, or run closer toy explosions, but with the 50m buffer zone I maintain, it's a pretty good tactic.
My point is that the current FOTM has two very obvious counters and I encourage people to expirament with cardiac regulators and shield modules again.
Stop trying to out fight the GA/AR combo at close range WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO WIN. Evade and outrange them. Ideally, a shotgun would win cqc with an ar but it rarely does because the damage is too low; that is a topic for another thread.
