CCP probably started nerfing it over concerns that they'd start melting some PS3's and now they're in it for the next 3 years with terrible rendering.
Know how I know? No official word = nothing good to say. Swarm's range nerfed. Sounds fair enough. Except its the same range, outside of which, they would render invisible+silent. Meanwhile non-rendered rail-tanks will still gib DS from 600 meters away.. .
CCP is actually now balancing game-play mechanics around gimped hardware specs for the long term. Is this good? I can't say I think it is.
There will continue to be no comment on the subject, optimization can only go so far and they've reached the limit already. What we see in 1.7 will likely be the standard till PS4. I only hope they can re-balance the game properly when things start working on PS4 - if Dust is still around by then.
But we're looking at 3 years till that anyhow so what's the point in caring? |

No point in caring.
They made a decision to go for shiny graphics instead of good gameplay.
Many other developers have made the same choice, and CCP should have looked at them for examples of how well that turned out.

Mario 64, Zelda, and Mario Cart are still some of the best games to play. Gfx is a short term gimmick anymore.
Granted, to have both is good, but knowing the limitations on PS3 it shouldn't have gone this way.

There are still a few games around that go for genuine gameplay over sheer graphics. It is true though that the industry tends to push graphics probably a little too far ahead of gameplay features and mechanics. |

It probably can, just more cheats are needed.
Cheats which are freakishly expensive as hell to develop in house or to borrow elsewhere.
That's what it comes down to these days but good cheats on graphics are never noticed or only noticed if you're really looking for them.
I am thankful for consoles at least because they do restrict the game developers a bit forcing them to consistently lower hardware requirements for computer games.

Or they can just move to PS4... maybe too much logic there for CCP.
Bottom line is terrible engine for dust, running on a ancient console with limited power, and inexperienced devs. Trying to develop the game on a console that's easier to work with, also with allot more power might have been the better thing, but they're "laser focused" on making this game work on PS3 for now.
Wasting time and money imo, but i'm no dev or publisher.

They could but even then cheats are still needed on those systems. I mean look at xbone running at 30 fps 720p to look nice on call of duty. The cheat they use is similar to the one they used on the original xbox 360, They draw a picture much much larger than the tv screen then downsize it.
For all its worth it doens't seem that 'much' better than the 360 version. Then again xbone just game out developers haven't had time to squeeze out every ounce of power yet.
I mean if you look at the last ps2 games to come out some almost had a ps3 like quality, While early ps2 games reminiscent of ps1 graphics.

Which is why people are finally realizing that render distance will not improve substantially anytime soon(read as: on this generation of console)
So long range combat is off the board for the foreseeable future.
What broils me up is that it has taken 5 months for there to be any announcement about making changes due to the restrictions CCP imposed on themselves.
They were well aware that swarms were invisible, and that FG users were not rendering. Did they nerf the ranges quickly, to make it so that people could actually engage those targets? No, we still have 400m swarms when they have known for some months that it is completely unbalanced.
On top of that, there have actually been backward steps on render distance, with 1.5 and 1.6 both reducing that draw distance even further. It is not unheard of for enemies to turn from chevrons into enemies under 100m, which is completely insane for a tanker to try and fight with.
To add insult to injury, you used to be able to carry a Sniper rifle in the tank, and manipulate the render distance to be able to get targets to show up briefly. That workaround got removed in 1.6, so now tankers can legitimately be blind.

good points. It's kinda sad they have to balance the game based on performance problems with the game.

I don't understand what you say, how can it be a problem with rendering? It's intentional, little turret don't have the problem, snipers, and infantry in general have a better rendering than vehicle pilots. It's clearly an intended cut on rendering distance for vehicle players, it's a nerf, nothing more and nothing less.

Yea but CoD has always look like it does now. CoD 4 looks almost exactly like CoD Ghost. Lazy devs.
While it takes a while to get the most out of a system, devs have allot of breathing room now with 8GBs of RAM to work with. PS4 having the better "quality" RAM for gaming, while xbox 1 has better RAM for multi tasking.
Either way they can dump the load on the machines, and do very little optimization, example CoD Ghost. VERY POORLY optimized game. 6 GBs of RAM minimum on PC??? Like wow.
Which is why DUST will do better, technically of course. They don't have to optimize the crap out of it to make it work properly because they have some power to work with.

intentional? ... sir, please. They gave people sniper rifles to snipe people at long range, yet people don't render in properly. Why give people powerful scopes and they can't see what to shoot at?

The range of the individual swarm rockets are not nerfed. Only their locking range is range is nerfed. But of course, if the rendering issues remains an issue, then the nerf won't make a difference.
Past:
In all honesty, working on limited hardware can be a good thing. Retro games of the past (Mega Man, Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, etc.) have all suffered the limitations of the hardware they were designed on. This forced every company at the time to spur some creativity in order to make their games stand out and be competitive with the rest of the games in the industry.
One example is that the audio music was extremely simplistic due to the limitations of the audio hardware itself, but clever composers and other music artists figured out how to work that limitation to their advantage. Tell me. What's the first song you can think of when I tell you "Legend of Zelda"? You're probably thinking that four-note melody that comes up every time you open a mysterious chest after spending an hour looking for the key. What about when I say "Mario"? Can you remember the first three notes of the beat? If you're old enough, you probably can. Music artists in the retro gaming era managed to create unique beats that stuck with us for years to come. Limitation spurred creativity.
Another example is the graphics. Retro games were all just 2D pixels and therefore many of the famous characters of today, specifically Link and Mario, were heavily influenced by there origins. Mario didn't get his mustache because he just looked good on paper. The developers for Mario didn't intend him to have a mustache but were forced to because 8-bit rendering didn't make it possible to make Mario's mouth. So the 'stache took it's place. The limited graphics also forced developers to come up with aesthetically-pleasing color palettes due to the 8-bit color limitation of the graphics. This resulted in the color choices that Link, Mario and even Mega Man are known for today.
Present:
Now here we are with advanced hardware so innovative that they are close to matching PCs if they keep up with the pace of progress and as long as Moore's Law holds on. High-fidelity graphics, surround sound stereo, multiplayer gaming, cloud storage, physics processing, etc. But even then there are still limitations.
If CCP can figure out how to make Dust stand out in an old console like the PS3 and make it a great game, then they will be very much prepared to handle the PS4 once Dust is ready to move to the new console.
But let's not forget that back then the PS3 was once considered one of the most advanced pieces of console gaming hardware at the time. The same can be said for the SNES, N64, and Sega Genesis.
CCP, thank you for hotfixing the knives. But please make sure they're at their full potential in 1.7.

Probably has to do with the speed of movement + rendering distances.

The problem ISN'T that the PS3 hardware isn't capable of better draw distance.
The problem is that a poorly-optimised Unreal Engine isn't capable of delivering better draw distance on the PS3.
That doesn't mean that CCP will be able to fix the problem and improve draw distance significantly, but the hardware is capable of better than this game can produce in its current state.
Also, compared with many previous builds, Uprising is very much showing CCP going for shiny graphics - but not at the cost of draw distance quite so much as at the cost of FOV (which I still miss having at a decent level).

The X1 is proving more difficult to develop for (at the moment) than the 360. The PS4 is easier to develop for than the PS3 and developers say extremely close to the pc with the added benefit of the 8 GB RAM.
This to me was always the argument to make the jump early and save the headaches of trying to get the best out of a platform isnt your norm.
I hope sometime next year they announce that they are migrating in a short timeframe (3-6 months). |

Personally, I think what they are trying to do is get the game polished up on ps3 before they finally port to ps4 so that way they will have less bugs and kinks to work out. Sure we are talking years in the future, but I won't be surprised.

I hope sometime next year they announce that they are migrating in a short timeframe (3-6 months). The key reason that the XBox 360 consistently outperformed the PS3 in most early multiplatform releases - and still outperforms it in some games where the PS3 port is poorly done - in spite of the PS3 having technically superior processing power, is the fact that the XBox 360's hardware is basically PC hardware, and there's a lot of proprietary tech in the PS3. When loosely-modified PC code is run through the PS3, it basically has to emulate PC behaviour with its own hardware, wasting a lot of the system's resources in order to make the software run.
If people code specifically for the PS3, or adapt the PS3 version of the game properly, it is possible to get better performance than the XBox 360, but they don't.
The PS4 is built in pretty much the same way the XBox 360 was - it's just straight gaming PC hardware with a proprietary OS. The XBox One is being built more like the PS3, in spite of Microsoft presumably knowing that AVOIDING that approach was part of why they had an advantage in the currently-ending console gen. It seems weird that they've decided to do this - particularly when they aren't getting an edge in performance from it, which was a major reason the developer limitations didn't hold the PS3 back too much. Although to be fair, the XBox One isn't AS different to code for as the PS3 was, so they might get away with it on those grounds alone. |

Correct - And in truth the only issue the Xbox One has (with regards to development) is the ESRAM which is giving them trouble. - They can develop fine for it, the trouble is getting the games on par with the PS4.
I only really wrote to disprove whatever IWS is trying to throw out there with regards to staying on PS3 instead of moving to the new gen.
All the developers are raving about PS4 and the ease of getting things up and running. I would expect developers that are used to making PC games to jump at the chance to move back to a similar platform. |

I don't think this will be on PS4. Sony have stated they don't want third party products on the PS4 (headsets, controllers etc). A lot of the players who came to dust have come from eve, so can you imagine the wailing that will occur when there's no kbm and they have to use DS4

An interesting premise by the OP. I believe there are a few things missing in the analysis of the situation.
DUST was supposed to be on UnReal 4, which has mysteriously not appeared on the PS3 as yet (that I have been able to detect as an outside observer). The major resources were all devoted to next gen (mid level PCs) and current generation nVidia and AMD discrete graphics cards. Our much beloved PS3s never got the alleged release.
The DUST artists were given the go ahead to dramatically increase the art assets in the game. Grass, biomes and better (more dense, higher level of resources) textures to make the game look better.
Combining those with melting PS3s is a fun thing to do but just replacing the thermal paste will solve a majority of those problems (as Sony had to do themselves originally) so they are not really a factor. Or shouldn't be. Allowing the user to change the graphic settings such that their personal system will not melt is not done in DUST. Some minor tweaks but nothing like on a PC.
The problem from this player's viewpoint is that game play was sacrificed for pretty, pretty grass. I admit the game looks much better but I would take the older graphic style if it meant they didn't break the basic game. Which they did. On purpose. Now they are claiming they are finding and solving some of the problems. Which is fine but the fact is they caused all the problems themselves when they increased the resources required to display the game while not taking the time to properly optimize what they had.
So, no it will not get better graphics. And, no it didn't need the graphics Uprising delivered as the game was fun before they broke it. But, that is my opinion. Just another Merc that is no longer buying AUR. |
