- Exit screen and be congratulated on wasting either hours of SP, or weeks' worth.
3. Create a valid fitting.
- Open fittings screen, get confused.
- Read tutorial text.
- Fit a militia Caldari suit with a militia Scrambler Pistol, militia SMG, militia armor repairer and 2 militia light damage modifiers. The screen turns red when you try to use that nanohive thingy, so you say 'screw it' and leave.
- Exit screen and be congratulated with some LAVs and something called an Active 1-Day Booster.
POST TUTORIALS: 4. What's that booster thingy?
- Wander around until you find "Augmentations."
- Activate booster immediately.
POST TUTORIALS: 5. At least this game hasn't been very hard so far.
- Start a match.
- Die to a proto with 2.5x the health and a Duvolle + Mods with 1.5x the damage in 1 second from 50m away.
- Get OHKO'd by a Charge Sniper Rifle 350m away.
- Get OHKO'd by every tier of Locus Grenade.
- Get 2HKO'd by a Madrugar blaster to the face.
- Get smushed by a LLAV against a rock.
- Get OHKO'd by a Railgun Turret 250m away.
- Get 2HKO'd by a Scrambler Rifle 60m away.
- Get 3HKO'd by a Mass Driver as you cower behind a crate.
- Get OHKO'd by a Forge Gun 200m away.
- Get OHKO'd by an Orbital from space.
- Spend 90% of the match running around if it's Skirmish, without knowing how to call in those starter LAVs.
- Spend 90% of the match getting spawn camped if it's Ambush.
- Spend 90% of the match redlined if it's Domination.
POST TUTORIALS: 6. Should I keep playing?
- Sees they only obtained 4,000 SP + 2,000 booster bonus.
- Sees that they need 600,000 SP to start speccing into proficiency.
- Sees they need millions in core skills.
- Sees they need millions in suits.
- Remembers only earning 6000 SP a match.
- Remembers that they gain 210,000 SP a week in passive and log on SP, and only 190,000 SP a week for actually playing.
- Stops actually playing.
Dust University is aware of how terrible the new player experience is and we try to fill in the holes CCP has in that experience. if youre new, come to us. this does not mean we hold your hand through your experience with us, you get out what you put in. but there are always people to squad with, ask questions and learn with. plus we have many lectures on various aspects of the game. so consider the uni a stop on your journey to get the basics down. You guys always get a plug in there somewhere, don't you? Regardless, I already have a corporation. The community does a decent enough job of teaching players if they ask for help, but it shouldn't be the job of the community to hold every nubblet's hand when CCP is supposed to give them more info. Adding a panel that tells you to get into a battle and get slaughtered, congratulates you for wasting all of your SP and then hands you an Active Booster you will undoubtedly waste is not helping; it's just bullshit. Also, to the poster above, yes, some players will be new to the FPS genre. Some will be children. They are not usually getting confused by simple FPS concepts such as, move left stick to walk and right stick to aim or press the triggers to fire/throw a grenade. The concept is clear; shoot the other players before they can shoot you. They are confused by everything else. A good example is Dropships. The things are hard as hell to steer as a new pilot and what does CCP do? They flash the controls at you for 2 seconds as you step in and expect you to fly. Millions of ISK in dropships later, you'll, hopefully, not be crashing into a lamppost on take off. It's like Battlefield. The first time I got in a Helicopter, it did a vertical U turn on take off and landed on its blades because the game never explained how to pilot the damn thing. The blueberries suck, but they could suck less with knowledge and some sort of midpoint between shooting helpless nublets in militia gear and getting shot at by Assault Rifle Player 1234 who's been playing the game for a year and has 20m SP.

How much more spoon fed do these people need to be? The games isn't that hard and reading really helps. Trying to be part of the community instead of being some universe changing lone wolf helps also. If you can't learn the game in a few days then you shouldn't be playing and if you quit within the first week you couldn't have cut it here anyways. This is a niche game that is only going to appeal to a handful of players. Those players are going to stick it out and play the game the others are going to quit. I am not saying don't help noobs but I am saying this game isn't that hard if you read and think.

It is just amazing how many people have problems with a game that they will complain isn't even finished. The new player experience is difficult but what do you want them to do? How much more do people need to be able to play a game? It is a shooter. Better stuff gives you more. Pretty simple really.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the big "Beta" tag there anymore. I don't know what needs to be done, but giving some militia suits to someone for joining a battle and speccing into any random skill isn't fixing the situation. Pilots need better tutorials on flying dropships, first off. I've met HAV pilots that didn't even know that you could disable active modules to start the cooldown timer right away. Not that crucial, but still stupid. It's never pointed out that you can see the efficacy and range of your target and I find that a lot of blueberries never noticed that they exist, thus forever are unaware of their proper range. I see blueberries that don't know how to even call in a vehicle, or use an Orbital. There are berries that don't even understand how you GET an Orbital, let along launch one. A solid 30% of the squads I join, the leader doesn't know how to set an order. Tons of guns have no militia variants, so berries have to waste their SP on them to test them out. I consider this to be a part of educating new players, too.
So a 3 week training course for a game?

Meeko Fent, I agree that some of the tutorials are missing or vague and should be better but they have continuously improved the entire process and it will continue to get better. We also need to remember that DUST is a community that is part of another larger community who share the same space. If it wasn't for that this game and its sister wouldn't exist. The people who are playing the game are what make it great, not hit detection or any number of stupid suits.
When players start it is difficult but like with lots of things the harder it is the better it is and it is the job of the community to reach out to new players and no amount of in game training is going to prepare them for their first week on the ground. If new players don't reach out to the community then they are probably doomed anyways, this game is based on the group and lone wolfs don't last very long. Screw CCP's match making and do it yourself. This game offers anyone who wants to change something like that the opportunity to do it and maybe even make some ISK for it.
