For those of you lucky enough to have gotten a PS4 already and are sensible enough to realize, just because you hold the power of 'next-gen' in the palm of your hands, it does not mean that you have to stop playing Dust 514, there is a way to bring a little of that experience into New Eden.
It was announced a couple of weeks ago that the DualShock 4 was compatible with the PS3 for some games. Dust 514 was not one tested in the article I read but after verifying for myself I am happy to say it is about 95% compatible. The biggest drawback is that the controller must remain tethered to the PS3 via the USB cord in order to function. If that is not an issue for you then you can take advantage of many of the DS4's improved features.
Ergonomically the new controller is superior in every way. It just feels great in the hand. The next best feature is improved analog sticks. The are tight, responsive and with improved grip and concave design, much easier to control. The D-pad and face buttons will function as normal.
One drawback is the with the improved R2/L2 trigger buttons. The design of the DS4 seems to place your index fingers right on them, which should be a good thing in most instances and would encourage users to make them your primary means to aim and shoot. However, Dust does not have control options to flip R1/L1 with R2/L2 so you are forced to still use R1/L2 to aim and shoot. Just based on how the controller rested in my hands this was a little awkward feeling.
Of course there are a couple other functionality drawbacks as well. Without a SELECT button on the DS4, the user has to access Chat channels via the NEOCOM which can still be called up with L1 or the new OPTIONS button (in lieu of START). Finally, the PS button does not work for some reason. So you will need a DS3 or some other means to actually quit the game or access the XMB.
So when the urge to play Dust 514 stikes you, in-between sessions of Killzone: Shadow Fall or whatever next-gen shooter has got your attention now, take solace that you won't have to give up the great new DS4 experience in order to do so.
TL;DR - The DualShock 4 will work on PS3 for Dust 514 with only a few limitations. |

Thanks for this.
I have a PS4 and the controller is quite nice compared to the old PS3 controller. Everything you say about how it fits in your hand I agree with. I like the concave analog sticks. They seem more tight and responsive.
It's too bad it has to be tethered but you can't have everything.
I'm going to give it a shot.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

In my opinion they are. Honestly, I thought all the hype over DS4 was just that....hype. The kind of filler used to get people excited and talking about next-gen.
When I actually got the DS4 in my hand, it surprisingly became one the things I love most about PS4.
