There have been players in this game that have always just blown your mind when you play against them, successfully pulling off crazy stunts, recklessly jumping into crowds and mowing them all down, etc. There is always that first face to face encounter with them that just sticks in your mind and solidifies tham in your memory as a player who you'll never forget. I have many such tales having been here for well over a year now, and here is such a tale, dredged up from the long passed days of pre-Codex, that I am sharing with you as I wait for my lunch to finish cooking. This is the tale of the Dust sniper whom I have more respect for than any other sniper in this game.
In the days when Line Harvest was the only map that was in the rotation, back when squads were only four man groups and repair tools had just been WP nerfed, I was in a corp called Up 4 Anything (U4A). I was running in a squad with Free Healing, rebel scum22 and mahhah and we were up against 2 squads of Imperfects with a hodge podge of random blues on our side.
We knew things weren't going to go well from the start, so we decided the best course of action would be to go 2&2 in LAV's and toss uplinks around to try and lure our bluedots out of the redline.
At the time, I had heard his name plenty of times before. He was well known as a sniper without equal in Dust. I had my doubts about it, though he had tagged me several times from what I had assumed was a hilltop before. While making a run back into the redline to let our Saga's shields take a break from the constant AV attempts, I saw him running with his squad out in the open. He was crossing the road with Mr. Zitro and Blondie Rhodes (think that's how he spelled it...) and I HAD to run ONE of them over. They were some of the biggest players in Dust, and in those days if you had the opportunity to kill one of those guys, you did everything you could to do so.
So I floored it. Mr. Zitro had made it from C to D and Blondie was almost clear of the road, but Sleepy Zan was just standing in the middle of the road staring me down, as if DARING me to try to run him over! Well alright then! As I passed under the cargo nest in the center of the field, he suddenly dropped to one knee in the middle of the street and lined up his sniper rifle. I though to myself "Is he seriously gonna try to snipe me out of my LAV like this?"
With my LAV only 2 meters away, going full speed and aimed directly at him at him, Sleepy Zan head shotted me out of my LAV and lept out of the way of my still moving vehicle, then killed my passenger moments later.
And that my friends is how you earn someone's respect. First time face-to-face meetings leave a lasting impression, and that is why Sleepy Zan will forever be the sniper I respect most in Dust.
Join me next time when I recall the tale of the greatest assault player in Dust.
Time to EAT!
