Edit: ok, now that I've claimed the first spot, I'm hopefully not going to read into this too much, but couple months means two months.
Hey Name York, Just to clarify - "couple" does not always mean two - speaking informally, it's just a few, or several, and we don't want this to be read as a hard, solid promise that two months from now everything CCP Wolfman said will be in the game.
Hope you guys enjoyed the interview - let me know any questions you might have for the devs, designers, artists etc and I will see what I can do. If you have follow-up questions to anything in the interview with Wolfman, let me know.
Down the line I might start an official interviews request thread where I'll open up to you guys to suggest questions you all might have. |

I have one question for CCP Wolfman, but it is rather more specific about the course of the game than your questions in the interview. But anyways, since it looks like he is pushing vehicles towards using active modules, what is his stance on passive modules?
I'd like to know, because in EVE, passive fits can be better than active fits with the appropriate circumstances. And I'm not favoring the idea of forcing vehicles in Dust to use active modules so they can have periods of near invincibility followed by periods of great vulnerability. I'd like to be able to use passive fits that sit somewhere in-between for an unlimited amount of time.
Thanks for the first like!
OK sure - can you formulate that into a direct, unambiguous question so I can take it to him? i.e, "What is his stance on passive modules with regards to [xxxxxxxxx] " so that there is no misunderstanding and I can get you the most valuable answer |

In Eve Online, Passive shield tanking mechanics are built around increasing your native passive shield recharge while decreasing incoming damage through resistance modules.
Increasing shield recharge can be done directly by using using passive shield recharger modules, shield power relays, and power diagnostics, or indirectly by increasing damage resistance to increase your "effective" shield recharge.
You can also increase your shield recharge rate by increasing your over all shield hit points.
Passive shield tanks also become stronger at their "peak" recharge level. At around 33% shield hit points.
There's much more involved with passive shield tanking as well, and it is very skill intensive, but often preferred over active tanking when youre not concerned with firepower.
Dust 514 doesnt have the mechanics described. We can't passive shield tank because of the lack of those mechanics, and anyone who has played Eve Online and flown a Caldari ship like the Drake, would be wondering why there was a lack of consistency there.
My question for CCP Wolfman is: Considering Eve Online's passive shield tanking mechanics, why weren't they included in Dust 514 shield tanking mechanics? Is it something that can be included in the future?

Trust me, everyone here already knows this.
The interview was written well enough, although it completely lacks any content.
On that basis alone, as an interview it is an abysmal failure. I am sure that there are some CCP fans who absolutely must get regular "updates" on what is going on.
I am not one of those, and putting out a puff piece to remind people that you still haven't completed core content 8 months after release is just hilarious. I can't help but laugh at how pompous you guys are that you think that this is the way out of the hole you have dug for yourselves.
The game is trending down, and the big draws for your player base are about to hit. To meet that threat, CCP has.......... nothing.
Fluff journalism is annoying. If they won't let you give out real info, tell them to hold the piece until you can.

Nice interview CCP Wolfman.
So, you're the guy in charge of core gameplay design? Well then, you're the guy who would surely know the answer to my question.
DUST core mechanics, as I understand, follows the principle of diminishing returns. The more you wish to enhance a certain aspect of your performance, the more SP/ISK/CPU/PG/whatever you have to invest to get it, and (most importantly) the price of increase in performance rises at a much higher rate than the gain you get.
The reasoning behind this is sound. It prevents people form making OP builds by focusing on one single aspect of their performance, and it also serves as an "equalizer" between new players and veterans.
It is therefore beyond my ability to understand why is it that with damage modifiers you have:
basic: 23 CPU, 3 PG, 3% bonus, 1275 ISK enhanced: 45 CPU, 5 PG, 5% bonus, 3420 ISK complex: 68 CPU, 9 PG, 10% bonus, 5595 ISK
Let me analyze:
2 basic DM give you a 5.69% damage bonus - marginally better than 1 enhanced DM, costing 1 extra CPU and PG, 870 ISK less, and one extra high slot !
2 enhanced DM give you a 9.56% damage bonus - marginally worse than 1 complex DM, costing 22 extra CPU, 1 extra PG, 1245 ISK more and one extra high slot !?!
In the two examples above, the lone fact that it takes you one extra high slot to get lesser tier gear performing as gear one tier above it, throws the concept of diminishing returns right out the window!
But it gets even worse... in fact, it gets worse to the point of being ridiculous - due to the stacking penalty, it would take an infinite number of basic DM to get the bonus of one single complex DM !!!!!
So, to conclude, there's obviously no diminishing returns here. On the contrary. You actually get more and more gain, the higher your Handheld Weapon Upgrades skill is. It makes absolutely no sense to use lesser tier DM if you've got the skill at level 5. The only situation where it would potentially make sense to use lesser tier DM is if you're restricted by your dropsuit's CPU/PG limit, and only if you're deciding whether to put one single basic / advanced DM, or none at all. And since the bonus they provide is a measly 3 / 5 %, "none at all" is usually the best option.
The result of all this is that a player should either train Handheld Weapon Upgrades to 5, or don't bother with it at all - not exactly a situation you would call "new player friendly". Gaining new DUST players and improving player retention rates is, I believe, in CCP's best interest (as well as existing player's).
Regrettably, damage modifiers aren't the only modules with this problem. Similar situation is with shield extenders, armor repairers, and some others. I mean, no offense, but with shield extender bonuses you get the impression that who ever did the balancing, wasn't thinking in the line of diminishing returns, but more in the line of "let's have some nice same-digit numbers here".
On the other hand, there are modules which seem well balanced. Armor plates for example are just fine now. Ferroscale and reactive still have problems, but not as near as damage modifiers IMHO.
Are there any plans to fix these modules in the future, or, if not, could you please provide the reasoning why are they balanced as they are, because I sure as hell don't see any diminishing returns there.
Sorry for the wall of text, and for the rage. I have nothing but best intentions / hopes for DUST.

I'm loving the new dropsuits and weapons coming out, but if my AR gets nerfed over a Mass Driver I will be on the forums heavy. The AR plasma rifle is the most versatile weapon in New Eden. Scrambler Rifles are a serious threat but can be counter if fired upon. I'm saving SP now for the new battle rifles coming because I need another versatile weapon to compete with the scrambler rifle and mercenaries who wanna sit on high ground with mass drivers and use cheap tactics. The war is on next month. CCP don't nerf my Plasma rifle the range is perfect.
I really think, none of the rifles should be nerfed because so many people spend so much time investing skill points into weapons, dropsuits and vehicles so when weapons, dropsuits and vehicles get nerfed, it's like a slap in the face because of the time invested. I really hope CCP realizes if your gonna go nerfing weapons please take a look at every weapon because if you nerf one weapon, or any other type of gear you set off series of bad events on the battlefield leaving a mercenary that is a expert in a certain field useless to their squad, team or Corporation. That is all I must go to the Battlefields of Dust 514 and kill.
Can't wait for the player 2 player market, I need to sell all the salvage sitting in my assets I don't use or I would never skill into so I can buy things in the market place that makes me more lethal or just make isk to fund private wars. You never know what you can do with a little extra isk. |
