Many players seem to want Dust to play like Planetside 2. Many reviews also lambast CCP for falling short of implementing an open world, as if open world was the standard they expected of Dust.
However having played many MMOs, some Planetside 2, and considering the implications of Dust as a open world game I'm inclined to disagree that this would be a Good thing.
Why? Open world MMO Dust could be epic!
It could be, but it would have to be done a certain way to make sense within the Eve universe Cons of Open World Dust include ~Having to actually jump about from planet to planet, ever watched an even player make a 50 jump travel? ~Having to constantly be defending a district, means being on that planet. If there's no action you're babysitting. If there is, it could come when nobody is online or free. ~Open world games like Planet side are an endless grinding tug of war. Which means there no real way to fortify your holdings and no entrenched powers like Eve. A good war requires a distinct entrenched super power, and in an open world PS2 context that is impossible.
The word on the streets is that Dust is "Just a lobby shooter", as if that is a Bad thing. Many FPS games are lobby shooters and people love them. They are casual and fit in well with Console gaming. Being able to hop in to a quick game is a good thing.
I think the real problem with dust is it's scale. Map sizes need to expand to their maximum, team sizes need to grow, and we need a wider array of weapons, suits, and BLOODY VEHICLES to populate the games.
There should also be an option/game mode for much longer engagements. Anyone willing to play through a game longer than 15 minutes can queue for those. Game modes also need a better balance between their ISK/SP pay out and costs. Currently there is no reason for me to play Skim/Dom as I'm in a match longer (more likely to lose a million isk Dropship) and make the same or less ISK/SP as an ambush at 1/4th the time spent.
How do you imagine an Open World Dust would work? What would it look like and could it realistically be implemented? Could it avoid some of the problems from a game like PS2?
