The idea comes from the mass effect 3 multiplayer, the players were given expendable 1 time use "first aid" kits that repaired your shields and health to full instantly, with a limit to how many you could use in a match. Obviously that would be a little overpowered, but something like a heavy shield capacitor or built in nanomachine self repair unit that takes up your grenade slot, could be put on a timer or one time use (not replenishable by nanohives or supply depot like grenades). The shield capacitor could instantly recharge a set amount of shields, while the repair unit heals a set amount of armor over a short time.
This basic concept would be good to start with, no need to get too complex but other ideas might be to bring the shield recharge delay to 0 a few seconds after the capacitor has been activated; even if you're being shot at your shields will recharge at the rate they normally would. Maybe repair unit could also modify your natural self repair rate for a short time, for example if you repair your armor at 10hp/sec, after using the module it may jump up to 20 hp/sec for 10 seconds along with the initial burst of armor repair, or maybe have a variant that just multiplies your natural armor repair rate for a set amount of time.
Obviously the concept is simple, you get into a tight spot, you tap that button and give yourself an extra few seconds to attack, hell alot of us start chucking grenades when we know we're going to die anyway, why not make that button actually useful?

Ehhhh, I see it's viability and think its awesome but I also see how it can be ridiculously OP, and can be exploited by supply depos.
For example a player has 2 fits that are exactly the same except for the name. He can just alternate between those 2 fits and keep getting his 1 repair thingymabob because technically he is changing fits a even though they are the exact same.
Either way +1

So? That just adds a strategy to the game where people will fight heavily over control of the supply depots and less people will destroy them, doesn't need to be alot of regen just enough to save your ass once. I exploit the supply depot all the time by having it let me put down 15 uplinks and tons of nanohives without spending a suit. People who do want to exploit the supply depot to keep refilling the thing, which I would definitely consider, would probably be a very good target for snipers, they're hurt, not moving, and out in the open, perfect target.
If you go with the timer/cooldown approach then you would have less supply depot exploitation but think about the waves of combat that would occur if everyone fought based on that timer? Would encourage people to regroup and push as a unit when they're ready, or rush ahead if the other team gets beaten down and starts to retreat and try to regroup.
And some people would still use regular grenades because it doesn't really matter what kind of emergency button you have if you explode.
It's not anymore OP than anything else you can do in the game (unless they come up with ridiculous numbers like the repairer giving you back 700 armor) but it sure as hell makes things more interesting :) |

In EVE there is a module that is similar to what you are asking for. Its called the ASB. Its a mid slot module (equivelent to a high slot module for us) that gives a large boost to shields. It can't do it forever though, and quickly runs out of charges and must be reloaded.
If CCP ever gets around to giving us infantry active modules then we could get something similar. It would be a very interesting change, for the better i think.

Our "active modules" would have to replace our equipment or take up a grenade slot I think, otherwise it would just be too difficult to navigate, controllers don't have hotkeys lol |

Here's the difference, throw down compact, stand in one spot, wait for armor to come back.
OR!
Press one button, shields or armor come back much quicker and while moving, also you still have room for equipment. |

I like it. It would be cool if the grenade slot could be used for new items that have utility on the battlefield for uses other than killing things, or even as a penalty to using active modules on infantry (which is happening, right CCP?)
I really want to add a module like the one you described to a commando fit as they have **** for regen.
I'll add a suggestion of my own - The motion detector
You could throw it and it'd scan for motion in a certain area for a little while. |

Could also work, but I figured making it take up a grenade slot would be more fluid in terms of use, and it would make people have some tough decisions, giving up a grenade might be tougher than an equipment slot, and besides there's already way more equipment than grenade variations |

You mean how people are just using logies to follow them around? Don't see why this is a problem, or why it's a problem to have your own self repairer, the real problem is that guns are so damn powerful that the only viable option is to stack damage and defense mods so with the continuing trend then something like this is definitely justified. If we did manage to back away from the current setup of the game it's still not like it's going to be a huge problem it's just another option to have to customize your suit, maybe then using something like a speed tanked suit could actually be useful. |
