I am currently working on turning my roommates who exclusively play Halo 4 over to DUST 514.
(It is a long, slow process)

Recently they asked me how many maps DUST has, and I had a hard time answering.

The reason I ask is because several game modes (such as ambush, and domination) use the same terrain + outpost as a larger skirmish map. However, these small maps generally focus on an area that isn't generally used in the larger maps as a central hotspot. Because of which, I would consider them different maps.

Do you consider the smaller + bigger variants of the same terrain + outpost as different maps?
What do you consider to be a "different" map? Unique outposts? Same sockets but different terrain?
Just a different layout of hotspots / points?

And based on that, how many maps would you say DUST has?

A map is a map not an outpost or any object contained therein.

Surely a map is a physical location and in DUST they are named.
So the number lies within the named.

At 3 moment there are about 2 fixed maps, as in no sockets!
 At least 5 V1 battlescapes
And the the 3 V2 battlescapes

There are then 3 V1 socket sets and 1 V2 socket set, so in total there are about 20 distinct maps in total!

But there are at least 3 more V2 battlescapes and 2 more v2 socket sets coming soon!

However once we completely move over to the V2 battleacapes and sockets we will get a total of at least 16 V2 socket sets and 12 battlescapes, which may eventually become the 4 full sized terrain maps!

 Good enough answer?

Half a dozen or so. There's the 2 old maps that don't change, and 4 or 5 maps that rotate out a couple of sockets.

Answering that question is a bit like answering "how many kinds of pizza are there".

There are relatively few kinds of base to choose from, but the combinations of toppings are endless.
Some of the compounds placed on the maps compliment each other brilliantly, and sometimes, even to this day, the mixtures will generate all new points of interest to surprise me. A high point on one might give a perfect vantage point over another, or the road layout might introduce an excellent spot for Proxys when it would have been ignored on another map.
