Once DUST is in a place where CCP is happy with the core gameplay (maybe by fanfest or so), I think they should announce a huge payout for the winning 16 player team in an annual tournament (with EVE OB's). This would get a ton of press and draw in tons of players looking to build up characters to compete. In order to be successful, players will need great skills and gear. They'll need EVE support, which will build up a ton of interest from both games. Think about how much interest such a marketing concept would generate. |

The point is that it would generate a lot of buzz in the gaming press. If it were announced say 6-9 months in advance, it would motivate a ton of people to start playing DUST for a chance at a huge amount of cash. $2,500 split 16 ways + the payout to your EVE support won't get much attention at all.
Also remember that a quarter million dollars isn't much in terms of a global marketing budget for a game. I think it would be money well-spent. |

Another point is a pool that size is enough money to cause a lot of backstabbing, awoxing, scheming, etc., especially if having EVE orbital support will be an important component to winning. I could imagine people getting paid off lots of money to do crazy things, like drop a Titan or mothership onto the grid above some of the later rounds of the tournament. |

Tech De Ra wrote:I approve of this idea, but a quarter of a million in prize money is pushing even the largest of current esports tournaments :P That's the idea. Make waves in the press. It should help both EVE and DUST numbers at a time when CCP will be competing with next gen titles.
As a comparison, $250,000 will buy you one 30-second ad in the series finale of Breaking Bad which is only shown in the US I believe. I think a huge prize would be a big motivator for players grinding through the early stages where they're getting stomped. Also, if there were a huge influx of new blood all at once, the matchmaker would have an easier time of making lower SP matches for them, encouraging them to push forward. |

Rynoceros wrote:How much do you spend in 6, 9,12 months of global advertising to announce a $250,000 giveaway? A minimal amount. Let the size of the payout be large enough that it becomes newsworthy in-and-of-itself. Free press, plus friends recruiting each other to make teams/corps would spread the news far and wide.
