Having players show up on radar for only 5 seconds is bad design for the scanner, especially when even ptototype scanners have this quality to them.
Two scanners have different lengths: Flux and Quantum.
The basic flux scanner is a great idea. It gives you a smaller more pinpoint scan (30 vs 60) over a longer range (150 vs 100), and allows you to see other players for 8 seconds instead of 5. The downside to the flux scanner is the smaller cone and shorter scan duration (1 sec vs 2 sec).
There is no flux scanner at the adv level, but there is a quantum scanner that is exactly the same as the basic adv scanner, only it increases the time you can see enemies by 3x (15 sec vs 5 sec). No downsides.
At the prorotype level, there is both a flux and a quantum. The flux gives you a larger area of scanning (90 vs 60), twice the range (200 vs 100), and lasts for 8 seconds compared to the basic proto one at 5. The downside is that it takes a long time to recharge.
The proto quantum scanner has the biggest advantage of any scanner, which is the ability to see targets for 5x the normal amount (25 sec vs 5 sec). This scanner again has no downsides. _______________________________
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the scanners. I use them on almost every suit, but I feel that the advantage the quantum ones have really takes away from every other scanner. Not only this, the only difference between the basic, adv, and proto scanners is that they can detect lower profiles. Unlike nanohives which increase their effectiveness in multiple ways, the scanners don't really get any better at scanning...just detecting.
The only real upgrade is the quantum scanner...as having scans last longer is the most important part about the scanner. Even the flux at proto level doesn't have the same functionality as its basic counterpart.
So I would like to see one of two things happen:
-Give quantum scanners a downside. Reduce the scan angle, distance, etc. or increase the cpu/pg costs, the detection level (longer to see enemies, doesn't detect very well), etc.
-Give basic scanners upgrades at each tier, but make sure they don't have any downsides (the reason you would use a basic scanner over a quantum). |

I imagine you mean they should get bigger cones ... maybe advanced could get upto 180 deg n proto could reach 270 deg scans.
EDIT :
I-Shayz-I wrote:having scans last longer is the most important part about the scanner. I should also add you mean the displayed results lasting longer ... the actual scan time only needs to be longer so you can spin the camera n scan more than the cone allows ... if advanced and proto had bigger cones, the scan time could be increased a little from basic to proto to give the sense of scanning a bigger area, but the results showing for longer with higher tech scanners. |

I feel quantum should have a wider scan cone, but have a MUCH higher DB rating (such as proto quantum have the same as the current ADV quantum, and ADV have the same as current STD scanner). and the idea where if you twirl with the active scanner only parts will show up. as in... can't find the pic, .

The 200m scanner is in my opinion by far the best. While it may not keep the enemy in view you immediately know the approximate location of all the enemies is a large area (since you're obviously doing a pirouette while you scan).
You are right though. Like most of the other equipment the various varieties are poorly thought out. |

I'd rather make a whole thread about how the entire equipment system needs a rework, but right now the focus is on weapons and dropsuits...and I'd rather see more of those than fixes to equipment.
For instance, Nanocircuitry gives an invisible 5% reduction per level to cpu usage...and yet every other equipment skill doesn't give any sort of bonus whatsoever.

I agree the only two scanners worth using at proto level are the Flux and Quantum. The quantum is what I started with, I like it its a solid scanner with NO DOWN SIDE (on this we agree). The Flux, I think is a better scanner if you have two in a squad with skilled users, to trivialize the cool down time. Small maps the Quantum is generally a better choice, while any open map the Flux is AMAZING!
You have my complete agreement that basic and advanced scanners need something to differentiate them from the Proto level. |

Could make scan time 1s so you can't do the 360 scan spin easily. |
