I have seen all this talk about how BPO's are hurting the economy in DUST. I do not understand where the heck this is coming from. Most BPO's are/were entirely Militia Based. In that end, the amount of money being saved is incredibly low. Let's take the most extreme example I can think of:
Raven Suit (3,000) 2 BPO Shield Extender (800) BPO Exile AR (1,500) BPO Syndicate Submachine Gun (2,800) Locus BPO (180) 2 BPO Armor Plates (740)
So with that set-up, you can save 9,020 each death. However, most of that comes from the Raven, Exile, and Syndicate. If you were to ignore those, the savings drop to 1,720 over using Militia with a Standard Assault, AR, and Sidearm.
I think I have died like 1,600 times. So if I were to run the BPO's over a normal suit with Militia grade slots, I would have saved 14,432,000 isk. Say I died 8 times (just pulling numbers squarely from my anus at this point) per battle making it 200 battles. Money varies greatly but the lowest I have typically seen in a full match was about 120k. So 200 x 120k = 24,000,000. So with the worst case scenario, I end up having 24 million instead of ~9.6 million.
But let's change the numbers. 4 deaths per match and averaging 150k per battle. That's 400 battles. 400 x 150k = 60 million. So in this case, I have 60 million instead of ~45.6 million.
But get rid of the Standard level BPO's. Saving drops to 1,720 per death. In total, 2,752,000 saved. That is less than 5 of the Tanks I field in normal play over the entirety of all of my deaths. So why exactly was it required for the Militia grade stuff to go away? The Exile and the Submachine gun BPO's were only able to be gotten through packs, which still mostly remain, so obviously the focus was on the Militia BPO's. If BPO's were having any negative effect on the 'Economy of DUST' *, then removing the standard BPO's rather than the Militia variant was the way to go.
* DUST doesn't really have an economy. It isn't like EVE where having an extra 100 billion over your opponent gives you a massive advantage because you can field a ship that was the best named gear in the game where your opponent might just be running Tier 2 stuff. In DUST, everything comes from the NPC store. If I have 1 million or 1 billion it really doesn't matter as long as I have enough to field what I want to field. Sure, if I had a billion, I would be far more blas+¬ about losing my Tanks but I have been money positive for a while. In a game where the biggest limiting factor is time rather than in game currency and there is little to no money interactions between players, can there really be an economy?
