Quote:HereGÇÖs what we know: the folks at CCP (Eve Online) used their Oculus Rift dev kit to create a sublime virtual reality starship dogfighter called Eve: Valkyrie (formerly Eve: VR). Valkyrie has been exclusively demoed on PC, and at this point, Oculus Rift only works on PC.
Based on those facts, we logically assumed Eve: Valkyrie would be a PC game that uses Oculus Rift.
Not so fast, says CCP in a rather startling, eye-opening admission.
Rock Paper Shotgun spoke with CCP Chief Marketing Officer David Reid, and when asked about Eve: ValkyrieGÇÖs PC launch, Reid made it very clear it is not locked in on PC or with Oculus Rift.
GÇ£Hold on a second, we havenGÇÖt confirmed that ValkyrieGÇÖs on PC,GÇ¥ Reid told RPS. GÇ£ItGÇÖs capable of playing on PC right now, but we havenGÇÖt confirmed what weGÇÖre going to launch it on.GÇ¥
GÇ£It technically works on PC, and itGÇÖs working fine, but there are other platforms it could run on. ThereGÇÖs nothing that technically prevents it from running on a console, for example.GÇ¥
What about the fact that the Oculus Rift only works with PC and will likely be a PC-exclusive device throughout 2014?
GÇ£No, weGÇÖre not necessarily [basing our launch on when Oculus comes out],GÇ¥ Reid said. GÇ£While we canGÇÖt get into details here, there are other platforms that are available. It is technically possible to run this game without a Rift. ThereGÇÖs a whole bunch of different things out on the market right now.GÇ¥
Well, well, well. Did Reid just let slip that Eve: Valkyrie will be a timed console exclusive?
WeGÇÖve been hearing rumors about an Oculus Rift competitor Sony is developing for the PlayStation 4 for months. We even dug up a recent patent that appears to confirm SonyGÇÖs virtual reality plans. And while absolutely nothing is official, it certainly sounds like CCP (which is already in bed with Sony via Dust 514) could be involved in SonyGÇÖs virtual reality strategy for the PlayStation 4 with Eve: Valkyrie. In fact, short of Star Citizen, I canGÇÖt imagine a better game for Sony to make a major VR splash with on the PS4.
WeGÇÖve contacted Sony in the past about the PS4 virtual reality rumors, and they replied with a straight, GÇ£We do not comment on rumors or speculation.GÇ¥
