It really is... Apart from having some good elements (massive battles, open world etc) it fell short on purpose and actual reasoning.
Sure, I could go out with the guys and fight the good fight on the frontline for the next seven hours but for what? To move the frontline forward a bit so it can move right back when I go to sleep tonight? To get a few more BP so I can finally afford that gun/accessory that's not much different than any other one in the game?
I dunno. Game was cool but damn it I like having some goal in mind besides a never ending war that is held back solely by game mechanics. |

IMO, Destiny is going to have the same problems as Borderlands but on a larger scale. Borderlands was cool - shoot **** and loot ****. Problem with it was that the progression was a little lack luster, imo, having to run across an entire map several times in order to complete arbitrary "kill ten of these" quests that were only made colorful because of the comedic factor in the characters.
Take out that comedic factor and you've got a level-based shooter that involves quests, running around the map doing arbitrary and bland tasks that aren't very involving for the sake of getting to a higher level... to get better gear... to get to a higher level... to get better gear.
Tie in that previously mentioned leveling system and you've got a major problem as all of your friends now have to get to similar level as you do, which by the time they do that you'd have hit whatever the level cap is and made a new character to try out a different playstyle.. Rinse, wash, repeat. These aren't problems that are new to the MMO world, they've persisted ever since the early days in games like Everquest.
Sure, you can make a new character and work -with- them to get them to that point but you'd have to do that -for every single friend that joins you-. That's not good gaming, imo. Repeating the same storyline progression over and over loses it's appeal after the first or second time because at that point it becomes routine, the creativity and immersion aspects aren't there anymore not that immersion ever really is in a multiplayer game, sorry but something that's supposed to be scary isn't nearly as scary as it could be when Johnny Nobody is bunny hopping in place saying he's Donnie Darko.
All in all, Destiny looks like it would be a -KILLER- single player game or co-operative game but you can't expect me to enjoy the scenery and backdrops that someone worked their ass off on when my party is wanting to press forward and get more loot. Nyx the graphics and story elements and you're left with a shooter-looter.
This isn't necessarily saying that Destiny is a bad game, it's actually a really cool concept but I think they're trying to appeal to the wrong crowd. FPS players usually have a short attention span with a low degree of patience, good graphics are cool and all but when the bullets start flying it's not something high on your priority list. A terrible looking game can still be fun if there's good game mechanics behind it (Minecraft being a prime example). Destiny, to me, just doesn't look like something I want to put up with, asking for 'x' years of my time in order to see everything the game has to offer isn't something I find enjoyable. At least in Dust 514 a new player can make himself useful by putting a few points into Nanohives/Active Scanners without needing a guide. |
