Synchelle GÇô Kihar Elokur, the Brutor student accused of killing three Gallente men, has been found not guilty by reason of self-defense. The verdict sparked several instances of violence between supporters of Elokur and an increasingly vocal Gallente-nationalist movement.
Elokur was arrested in early August after killing three Gallente men who attacked him in what was believed to be a racially-motivated assault. Elokur killed all three of his attackers, raising questions over his use of force and whether it was proportionate or not. It was even suggested that he might have pursued his attackers after they attempted to flee, which would have violated Federation law on reasonable use of force in self-defense. He had been held in custody for several months prior to his trial, which began on October 15th.
During the trial, prosecutors attempted to prove that Elokur had provoked the attack, that his life had never been seriously threatened, and that he followed a third attacker several blocks after killing one and mortally wounding another. The defense, however, brought in experts who testified ElokurGÇÖs wounds would have prevented him from giving chase and that the fleeing attackers had suffered life-threatening injuries prior to their flight. The jury returned a not guilty verdict after a short period of deliberation. The defense hailed the verdict as a victory for GÇ£law-abiding Federation citizens everywhere.GÇ¥
The trial had become a focus of controversy, as many Minmatar believed Elokur was being tried solely because of his ethnic background. Protestors frequently gathered outside the holding facility where he was held and chanted slogans. While the protests had been peaceful, it sparked angry rhetoric from anti-immigrant, nationalist pundits, who claimed the protestors were attempting to circumvent Federal justice.
After the verdict was read, several Minmatar communities in Synchelle erupted in spontaneous celebrations. While most involved only minor incidents of vandalism, in several locations Gallente men dressed in replica Black Eagles uniforms appeared. At least three outbreaks of violence were reported, all involving the celebrators and Gallente. While no fatalities were reported, at least twenty have been hospitalized with injuries and dozens, both Minmatar and Gallente, have been arrested. Police are currently investigating which groups initiated the violence. |

Well, Gallentean justice seems to be able to find its way to what looks at a glance like a good outcome.
A note to the Federation, however: the State has brought its fascist elements to heel (Provists) or reaffirmed their criminal status (Templis Dragonaurs). The Federation's Black Eagles, however, existed before Tibus Heth's reign, and continue to enjoy federal sanction despite apparently furthering the interests and beliefs of a certain hard-right political figure more than Federation policy.
Now, hate-filled fools are representing themselves as Black Eagles, and it hardly smells like slander-- more like fealty.
Perhaps some housecleaning is in order? |

Wrong. The Black Eagles were founded as a direct result of the events of YC 110 when Heth invaded Luminaire to take back Caldari Prime. He was only able to accomplish this due to the treason of Admiral Etturer, whose selling of military secrets allowed the Caldari to bypass the Gallente early-warning system 'Tripwire'.
The 'Black Eagles' are the internal investigations division of the Federal Intelligence Office (FIO).

The Gallante Federation rarely forcibly takes over civilizations. The few instances we use force, are when we feel that the people are being forcibly ruled under a rule which fails to uphold the basic rights of every Human. Usually we try diplomatic approaches, if they decline, then we leave them alone. Though, they always come around... Even if it takes some, persuasion. |

Yes, they may be shady bastards, but it pays to have one's facts straight Equally worth mentioning is the fact that the Templis Dragonaur "terror cell" has existed since the times of the first Rataa Empire. It is tradition, and sacred to true Caldari. At least... It was.
As much as I hate kakku and their Black Eagles, I won't sink to the hypocracy of acting like I can't understand where they are coming from. I say good on the citizens of the Federation for standing up for themselves. Fair enough; I stand corrected. Perhaps it's more Mentas Blaque's political career I'm thinking of. Or perhaps the U-NATs.
Actually, the origins you correctly point to (now that I take the time to brush up on my recent history-- memories are odd things) make them more disturbing rather than less. I hadn't realized that their powers were quite so ... sweeping. It's the sort of thing we in the State take for granted, but it seems sort of corrosive for a democracy. Also, they seem to have been introduced in reaction to a perceived catastrophe. That's sort of a dangerous time for democracies; just ask the Federal government at the time of Nouvelle Rouvenor. The impulse seems to be to undercut your cultural values for the sake of greater security.
The meritocratic/oligarchical Caldari State is built to protect the cultural integrity of its peoples, including from the whims of the public. A democracy, however, is subject to the winds of public opinion, which can be driven to operatic heights of folly by any severe shock.
It's understandable, certainly, but it does seem to make monsters. |

Any and all actions that the SDII partake in are initiated on the basis of furthering the sovereignty of the Gallante Federation. That's what the Templis Dragonaurs claim to be to the Caldari: a force protecting Caldari sovereignty. If they take it farther than the State itself is willing to, well, that's just because the State doesn't see the true danger foreigners pose. Fae-haan may have a certain nostalgia for a cause he once believed in, but an ethnic Achur living as a Caldari citizen has a lot to fear from these sorts of fools.
Each society has its bitter, hateful shadows, soldier. The Caldari State's just shaken its off, for the moment. It seems like the Federation's still wrestling with its own. |
