If you're calling it an alliance, then of course it matters what you mean by the word. You're trying to have it both ways here.
I don't see how a definition of a word matters. Behind closed doors they're an alliance. In public they're acting as though they're not in one. My opinion of what it is, is different to yours. So your definition by default is also different. You don't see how the definition of a word matters? Are you trolling me? Wait, don't tell me. The answer will be meaningless.
Alliance (capital "a") - official association in New Eden alliance (lower case "a") - loose confederation with no official relationship
Same thing happens here:
Earth (capital "e") - the planet earth (lower case "e") - dirt |

It's a co-operative group following a common goal. "I won't punch you in the face" is not an alliance.
I disagree - "official" indicates something formal. You can have an informal alliance with someone that can fall apart. Traditionally in New Eden these are referred to as coalitions, though you can make a case for alliance (little "a").
People have "wink wink nod nod" partnerships all the time, both in game and in real life. |

Chunky Munkey wrote:Formal and official, alliance and coalition, these are both synonyms. So I'm afraid I'm not sure what distinction you are making.
In New Eden, there are game mechanics for an Alliance. There are rules for operation dictated by the games, and there is an in game monthly fee to maintain the alliance. If you want to join an Alliance, you have to submit an application, much as players in Dust submit applications to corporations. As a CEO of a corporation, you then declare support for the corporation you want to "lead" the Alliance. If your alliance goes to war (another mechanism in the game) you don't get a choice as a corporation - you are put into a situation where you are at war with another group of players (means nothing in Dust, but in Eve it means pilots can be shot anytime and anywhere, regardless of circumstances). Etc.
A "coalition" in Eve is a group of corporations or Alliances working together toward a common goal, but there is no mechnism behind this. All you need to "join" is the good faith of the other people that they won't hurt you - you have to trust them, there is not game mechanic to protect you. If someone in your coalition goes to war, you are not dragged into it, and there is no actual ISK cost because it is just a handshake agreement.
I hope this clears it up - it is not always clear and I see where it might be confusing.
EDIT: think legal binding agreement in a court of law vs an agreement between neighbors that they won't make too much noise. |
