Aisha Ctarl is my character's name, and she like many other mercs of DUST 514 is just a string of code and pixels formulated to make an image.
While this is not a pressing issue, CCP I ask can you please consider giving our mercs souls. Our mercs need something that makes us connect with them, something that either makes them feel like a genuine character we have created or an extension of ourselves. Right now, my character Aisha simply feels like a filler of "Clone slot 1 of 3 in DUST 514 build 1.5." Something that would help Aisha feel "alive" is to give mercs voice acting. For example say I'm being injured in battle and am losing health, if I double tap left on the D-Pad maybe she could cry out something akin to "I need reps!" If her health becomes critical, her voice could even become more hysterical, more desperate sounding, more pleading asking for reps so I get a sense of EMPATHY (magic word there) and actually connect with my character and feel her sense of impending death.
While EVE does not have voice acting, one still has a sense of connection with their character because of the great customization of your avatar. EVE players can see their character's face, their outfit, their mannerisms and nuances, even this gives a player a greater link with their character. Currently our mercs are dropsuits....yeah dropsuits. It's implied there is a person inside but I've never seen my actual character therefore my character is an Amarr Prototype Logistics a.k0 Suit. Our characters are silent, stoic, space soldiers that never remove their armor and never socially interact with each other - for all I know, my character is some sort of robotic drone programmed to be mute and loyal to the Amarr Empire. Think of John (Master Chief) from the Halo universe, he's a like-able guy and one can easily connect with him and his story. Now, imagine a Halo universe where John kept his armor and helmet on at all times and never uttered a single word - never even interacted with Cortana or anyone else for that matter - that right there is our current DUST Merc.

I traded my life for immortality, not my soul - merely being conscious is enough criteria to have a soul.
For example a robot can be activated, but it is not conscious therefore it has no soul and I'm fairly certain that you'd agree that robots do not have souls. Since people are conscious beings, It is fair to say they have souls, be them immortal clone soldiers or not, if they are conscious, they have a soul. |

What about a sentient AI that exists in a featureless box? Despite not being able to manifest any emotional analogues it may develop, in the form of vocal or facial expression; does it have a soul?
No, I don't really expect anyone to answer that. I do agree that we desperately need more personalization options though. The voice idea makes sense from both an immersion and a practical gameplay perspective (I'm also pretty tired of hearing my character grunt like a grizzled, probably hirsute, man while I sprint). I submitted an idea for custom portrait creation (as it'd be cheaper to produce and implement, and could be outsourced so as to not tie up CCP staff unduly), but that thread never went anywhere. I used to get giddy over the idea of someday having EVE's character creator, until I realized how low a priority and how difficult it'd be to implement in Dust. Now I'd be content with a slideshow of pre-made portraits (like in Shadowrun Returns, etc) to choose from.
Oh yeah, and looks don't matter and you shouldn't need a face to express your character's personality, blah blah blah... but really, I want some damn eyeballs already. |

So do viruses have souls? Because research indicates that viruses are able to respond to stimuli in their environment, therefore making them "conscious".
But maybe this isn't what you meant. Maybe you meant, for example, that if someone consciously thought they were human, then they have a soul. But this brings us to the other side of the argument. The side that says that animals may not be consciously thinking, "I am a cow. Therefore, I have a soul." If they are not consciously thinking that they are animals, then, by your definition, they could not have a soul.
So again, do viruses have souls? I'm not trying to attack you or anything, I'm just wondering what you think. |
