new-ish pilot, wanting advice specifically from armor-based pilots (if there are such a thing :)
One of my alts ended up with a stock of gorgons, and armor-related skilltrees, rather than shield based. At current skill levels, he can fit a nice "cheap" gorgon, with 3x60mm armor, no rep... OR 1x120mm armor, and a repper. (or I think 2x60mm +repper, which amounts to same thing)
Right now, it seems to me that the 3xarmor is better, since it gives me armor practically equivalent to a cheap tank (4,000+ hp?)
if I have a repper, but dont have enough hp to make it out of range, Im gonna be toast anyway. Contrariwise, if I can make it out of range safely, I can then either find a supply depot, or just recall the beastie.
agreement? alternative suggestions?

Hmmm.
Wouldnt it be simpler, and almost as (sometimes more) effective, to go for
1x60mm, repper, 2x voltaic energized plating?
That way, instead of "20% resist sometimes, 35%(?) for short times", you get "30% resist, all the time" ?
Not to mention being able to avoid fiddling with actives, and concentrate on flying
It should also bear mentioning for other readers, that this only applies for people who have actually skilled into unlocking Grimnes dropships, since it requires 4 slots.
If you're going militia Gorgon, it only has 3 slots, so requires additional strategy. |

I revisited a neglected alt today, that has an incubus unlocked
He doesnt have the shield modification skill above 1. So I tried slapping on 2x60m to see what happened. "Big" 20% movement penalty, right?
... could have fooled me. The ship still handles REALLY well, to my rookie tastes.
I tried running a little amok, with some cycled missiles , across the open-flat mini-city area.. Communications Outpost ?
It went *really* well. Albeit because the enemy were rookies :) But as soon as damage actually started biting into my armor, I headed out, and hit the repper. Didnt die once. Even with multiple passes. That, for me, is a big thing! :)
There was a pretty close call where I was running away, and got knocked down to 0/0. However, had the repper running, so I got back into flyable mode in time
Fit: Shield extended I scanner - IGL repper (level 1 or something?) 60mm nanofibre plate 60mm nanofibre plate Dont remmeber last low slot.maybe energized nanite plating 3x cycled missile launchers
I think I'm going to have to try this sort of thing out on a gorgon and a grimnes, to check out difference in handling. ( I made a gorgon fit with IGL repper, and 2x60mm plates okay)
But for now, bedtime... |

A passive tank is very weak compared to an active tank, timing can be an issue, and yes sometimes you are left without protection but this is more of an issue for a tanker, a dropship pilot on the other hand has the ability and should have the awareness to get out of danger before he needs to wait a very short period before his hardeners are usable again.
Thank you for the perspective.
On my part, I think my flying skills are not good enough for me to be grabbing for the hardener, AND the repper, AND flying out of the area without crashing. (plus, my "awareness" sucks)
So until I get better at it, I guess I'll stick with passives :-} |
