Been thinking about matchmaking in dust as have been involved in a lot of one sided matches sometimes winning sometimes not - and the best matches for me are then ones that go down to the wire.
In real wars terrain and opposing forces are not balanced if one side has an advantage in position the other will counter in some other way for example superior numbers - think Thermopylae
In dust and other FPS however developers seek to create balanced maps with equal teams fighting over them a contrived situationGÇô which in dust can be particularly difficulty due to the advantage high SP and well funded mercs have GÇô and that players of this type are more likely to be in a cohesive squad or queue synced team GÇô leading to the all to frequent stomping.
What I am suggesting is CCP explore other options for balancing matches such as unequal numbers of players on each team or for ambushes different numbers of reserve clones this could be dynamically adjusted a very simplistic method would be total number of skill points on each team
example Team A 10 players with 10m tip vs Team B 12 players with 8m sp
with a limit of say 50% disparity in numbers to avoid one palyer with 20m sp facing 20 noobs.
more advanced models could add factors to take into account squads/randoms and imbalances in the map etc.
This may also make map design easier as there would be less need to exactly balance the terrain as match results could be observed on a new map and team strengths adjusted accordingly GÇô and also open up options for deliberately unbalanced maps for future game modes GÇô e.g. holding defensible position against superior numbers.
What do you think?

I like your idea, but as it's a game that people spend $ on "per play" sometimes so it's not a good biz model for the guys in charge, I would think. |

...that said, some maps need rethinking, none-the-less. That new "gallente" dom map, the one with the the pipeline that is "dropship only" needs revision. We can't expect new players to keep playing when they have no chance to win. When I get placed in a dom on that map, I place some uplinks and spend the rest of the game trying to find a way up to where the enemy is killing me from. Can't find a way up, anywhere, and dropship controls blow; the "dropship team" wins. |

I really disapprove of SP MMing.
I have 7.5 million SP, but wasted it on checking every suit and weapon out, and being put against those who went full proto on 4/5 skills seems very unfair. It be no better then current.
But I agree, MMing doesn't work, and can't work with varying tiers of gear, as say someone plays one match with militia, gets put in a lower level match, then whips out full proto.
Myself, I believe Tiericide would be the best balance we can get without limiting what a player uses. |
