In another thread I asked "What features of DUST 514 that players like -- current or promised for the future -- will differentiate it from potential competitors". I've attached the results at the end of this post.
DUST 514 has to be at least at parity with other FPS titles. But for me, the sense of the thread was that what drives players to feel the game is GÇô or could be GÇô special is - What they do in the game makes a difference to them. They have put time and effort into building their characters. They can see a way where they and their friends can have something of their own in the game that can grow over time.
- They can get the game for free and it will continue to grow over time and GÇô even if they step away from it for a while GÇô their effort won't be lost.
- There is an ongoing story GÇô based in EVE lore GÇô that makes what happens in DUST 514 make some kind of sense. It may be science fiction but it's not magic and it is a story that is ever changing.
I was encouraged with what Jean-Charles Gaudechon said in his Executive Producer's MessageQuote:With DUST 514, my mission is to give you the most intense and engaging experience possible for a free-to-play online multiplayer shooter in the EVE Universe. This requires focusing primarily on the core gameplay, but also on a deep and rewarding link to EVE Online and everything that comes with it: the incredibly immersive fiction, sandbox design, best-in-class player-driven economy, and much more. This is where DUST 514 differentiates itself completely from all other shooters and is why I love the game. Features such as player trade, valuable resources transferable and useable between DUST and EVE, and new game modes that capture the sandbox nature of our game, are all building blocks towards that vision. We will be revealing more details at EVE Vegas later this month, followed by in-depth articles, developer blogs, and more. It seems in line with what the players that responded to the thread expressed.
I do, however, have a concern. Every new face at CCP has great vision. That vision is so regularly followed up by seriously flawed execution that it has become a running joke in the community and GÇô to some extent GÇô within CCP itself. There is much to admire in an organization that breaks new ground and soldiers on until they get it right. But there's also an old joke in the computer industry.Quote:The first guy with a good idea screws it up. The second guy fixes all the mistakes the first guy made. The third guy makes a pile of money. I hope with DUST 514 CCP can be all three guys.
What people in the thread thought set DUST 514 apart: Implemented or partially implemented...
- Greater variation in maps with mix-and-match installations and terrain which will build over time as new assets are created.
- Calling in persistent game assets
- - The difference between DUST 514 and others is the difference - - between player control over calling in your own tank/turret/what-ever - - as opposed to having them spawn / re-spawn on the battlefield.
- DUST 514 might not be the most accessible game. It's hard to get
- - started. But once you get started it's easier to get back into and you - - aren't penalized (too much) for stepping away and coming back. - - As far as I know there isn't any FPS that has a similar mechanism and - - something fresh to come back to without paying real money to get the - - update.
- Connection to another MMO
- - Firing from space into DUST 514 on the ground
- Ownership of territory. Executive Producer's Message
- - Though this isn't visible to the troops on the ground in any plans I've - - seen. Players can't go to a location their corporation owns and just - - fly/walk/drive around and have the place have the same layout it - - had the last time they were there.
- Meaningful team & clan-based combat
- Meta-gaming & broader strategy elements
Future that CCP says it has in-plan
- Player market (in a EVE based FPS)
- Firing from the ground into space to destroy attacking ships in EVE.
- PvE tied to the back story and with an impact on the world.
- - Its a great idea and I know CCP has committed to it even though theyExecutive Producer's Message - - say it won't be real soon.
