Win enough to get one means there is a very good chance your team is winning. So you get a extremely powerful weapon that KOs everything and you get more WP resulting in another OB? Also the squad leaders KD.R and WP spikes, thus the reward most likely increases for only him.
Edit: Don't get me wrong! They are awesome.. But just don't seem to fit in a competitive situation for a video game. |

Yeah, that's my problem . Orbitals are essentially artillery strikes. You don't call in a blind artillery strike if you are succeeding in a battle. You call one if you need the help and are losing.
So, an orbital should be for the team not getting a certain amount of WP by a certain time.
I would say that if the winning team gets it then it should kill everybody in the area like a blind artillery strike would. But, we know that wouldn't be abused to death don't we? |

But sometimes games are close and orbitals secure victory just slightly, depending on how well squad leaders on either side place them and whether or not they timed it at critical moments.
The difference between those games and absolute pubstomps come down to squads of random blueberries and squads of organised, communicating members.
So it's quite a predicament. Unless organised squads formed BEFORE entering the warbarge and in battle are given an incentive to play against other squads, perhaps a special high-risk high-bounty contract, classified as dangerous missions recommended for coordinated teams, then this continues.
Or change the orbital mechanics. I was thinking give all WP earned by OBs at the end of the battle, so that it's calculated for SP/ISK but doesn't contribute to the WP requirements for the next orbitals.
Or make it so orbitals don't give WP at all, but depending on the damage done, the squad gains extra ISK (and SP, maybe)

Pretty sure that the WP from orbitals doesn't count towards the next one - IIRC that was fixed not long after OBs were released. |

Nice to check back on this thread with the new changes to OB mechanics in FW. Yes, OBs not on a timer mechanic often work to further demoralize an enemy force that's already down.

Edit: Don't get me wrong! They are awesome.. But just don't seem to fit in a competitive situation for a video game. I agree completely about Orbitals basically being what Killstreaks are in the Call of Duty series, and that's part of why I was happy to see the changes they made in Faction Warfare where they removed those completely and only kept ones that can be used EVE-side.
I'm not sure how they'd be able to allow for that with public battles, though, as those are composed of completely random groups of players, and the current model requires that you be a member of one of the involved Corporations to be able to deliver support.

I'm surprised you've heard of the CPM if you haven't heard of Hans. I suppose it's because he doesn't shitpost in GD all the time.

This issue was raised at the last fanfest questions.
The dev basically said there was little they could do about the 'negative re-enforcement' OBs provide.
I think to promote teams and squads all squad leaders get 1 OB per game.
Thats it.
This, I believe, is preferable to the avalanche of OBs against already losing sides.
Lets face it, OBs as they stand add nothing except securing victory. More often than not I see OBs being used on a losing team as it attempts to wrestle back control of the last CP.
In many ways OBs sort of reduce gametime by about half, by thats time victory has already been secured as any attempt to come back is mitigated by strikes.

Yes iv thought the same thing for a while now, I think they should be removed from pubs because its just cheap in a pub match.

I agree.
It seems like the ultimate pub-stomp. I notice that when orbitals start hitting a losing team, everyone on the losing team starts switching to militia gear and snipers start to pop up like weeds.
I think this stuff should all be started and controlled EVE-side. They should start FW battles. They should determine what battles get supported and when.
When the time comes EVE guys should also determine reinforcement of districts, supply of weapons, dropsuits, vehicles and clones. All the logistics for fighting a war.
