Often this is the case, really it is simply a matter of poor communication skills. The same happens in verbal conversation. People are so busy looking for a counter argument that they only half listen, or in this case read what is being said. In forums the quote button partially contributes to this, Ina face to face conversation you could paraphrase what the person says in order to clarify and affirm your understanding of what was said, however with the quote button one does not even have to read or comprehend what was said, it is often used as an ammunition supply depot, or as a way to keep "conversations" organized. Often people make assumptions rather than ask for clarification, partially because of an adversarial approach to communications. (one finds this is more common in competitive communities, such as capitalist societies, and the internets.
