Hello! IGÇÖm just here to say that IGÇÖm a student in college and that IGÇÖm doing an ethnography project on the vehicle community. Ethnography is the study of cultural phenomena and human societies (alien studies would be extraterrestriography :P). What I wish to do is study vehicle players, more out of simple curiosity than anything else. There are a few goals that I have, though: 1.) identify whether or not there is a GÇ£communityGÇ¥ of vehicle players in the first place (a community being a GÇ£social, religious, occupational, or other group sharing common characteristics or interests and perceived or perceiving itself as distinct in some respect from the larger society within which it existsGÇ¥), 2.) find those things, those ways of doing or saying things that are unique to the possible vehicle player community, and 3.) make note of them so that the layman (in this case, my classmates), can understand them. So erm, any volunteers?
Relevant information: IGÇÖd have to set up an email contact so that I can send permission and interview forms. Mail Pompeius Maximus in-game if youGÇÖre interested in participating. If you're interested in trolling, send mail to Princeps Marcellus. Now, this is going to happen in three stages: First, you fill out the permission form. Second, you fill out the questions. Third, I observe you "in the field" (since I don't actually have a reliable recording device, so this most likely will be me scribbling down everything that I notice inside of the passenger seat of your vehicle while you talk and try desperately not to get killed.)
As there is a big inconvenient process attached with doing this project What you need to do is print out the permission to be recorded form and sign it, scan it and then send it back to me. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. If nothing else, I can compensate you with ISK.
And one last caveat: this is sort of a beta test, at the moment. I've never done an ethnography assignment before. I might change up the questions or the way that I record (hey, who knows, maybe I'll even find a decent recording device) as I go along. And I'd appreciate your feedback, too. If there's a thing that you think I should include on the interview questions (and frankly the questions are rather lacking right now), then say so!
...And that's it! Thanks for your time. |

Not to try and influence your study but I think you will find a number of things tankers have in common.
Ruthless barbarians towards Infantry but a strange sense of chivalry towards each other, to expand on the theme a bit more when two tankers meet its a jousting match, the comparison kinda ends there because the combat itself resembles a brutal melee with some sneaky back stabbing and sand kicking.
Highly territorial with large healthy egos and an unwillingness to acknowledge any other tanker as the better pilot.

Dropship pilots are probably the craziest vehiclers out there.
You have to be crazy and a tad ingenious to fly dropships effectively......you'll know what I mean if you have ever flown in my dropship...
....I'm the guy that flys through the "main gate" on the orbital artillery outpost and flies through the giant openings on the new research outpost. |

Tell you what, if you reimburse me for any and all Dropships I lose during this "Study", you've got a deal.

Heh. I thought about doing this, but then I realized that someone could troll me by crashing a dozen or so dropships and, knowing my reputation as a handsome and honest ethnographer, force me to reimburse them for all their losses.
I'm sticking to two million a person. I'm hoping to do about five people, because that's what my wallet (and my mind) can handle.
Also, scheduling's going to be a ***** because I don't know if I'll be able to set up my PS3 at my dorm or not. It's normally located at my dad's house. |

I'd be willing to help but even though I've been a tanker for about 80% of the time I've played starting with the first wave of eve players let into the beta, about a year and a half give or take, I can't justify running my tanks in pub matches. I run them in PC plenty because its important enough and the pay is good enough to warrant their use. If you want to run with me keep in mind I'm going to be rusty when it comes to pub tactics. |

It sounds like an interesting project, and I hope it goes well, but just keep in mind that pilots are used to being pushed around and may not respond well to an outsider, as it were, asking them questions.
As for the isk, two million would pay for maybe one and a half properly fitted Assault Dropships. Just something to keep in mind. |

Why don't you save yourself some time and make it all up. It's not like you prof is going to buy a ps3 and then spend hours downloading a game on it to verify the validity of your assertions. |

Is this not the same with infantry?

I'm not really coming into this project as an outsider. I am an armor tank pilot with roughly 10 million dumped into tanking skills. I have been a tank pilot since the beginning of Uprising. The problem that I have is that I am not the vehicle community. I represent one person, which is myself. That's I want to talk to other vehicle players. There's a reason for why I picked the (possibly existing) vehicle community as the subject as my project. It's something that I'm at least somewhat familiar with. What this project is all about is stepping back and being able to explain this little miniature society to others.
And as for the whole compensation issue, if nothing else, I could just talk to people in the merc quarters. While fieldworking is a vital part of the project, I'm sure that I could get my teacher to understand. ISK is a thing that I understand. |
