So right now we only have the Amarr heavies, which means that normally you should run plates and damage mods instead of shield mods...later on we'll get the other racial variants...
But is there a proper way to fit a heavy to focus on shields right now? Or do you have to dual tank to be even the least bit effective? Keep in mind I also want to stay cost effective so I'm sticking with the advanced basic suit.
My first idea was to just put as much health on the suit as possible, use a prototype LIGHT weapon to make up for the damage, while still having at least one slot for an armor repair. The reason I'm not using an HMG is because they really need the extra damage to be effective, which means sacrificing high slots that could be used for shields.
-2 complex extenders -1 enhanced plate -1 complex repair
The problem here was that the shield didn't come back quickly enough for them to even be useful. The only time you were at full shields was at the beginning of your first battle after you spawn, and if you had plenty of time to recharge between battles.
My next idea was to just have super recharge, not as much health:
-2 enhanced energizers -1 enhanced regulator -1 complex repair
This seemed to work well, but those stupid ARs knock shields out in no time at all. The amount of time spent behind cover waiting for the shield recharge was still too long, and I was losing battles. I figured that maybe I just need to kill the opponent as quickly as possible, and keep my distance a bit more. By having more damage, I also decided that I could downgrade to an advanced weapon.
With a new focus in mind my new fitting was:
-1 complex damage mod -1 enhanced energizer -1 enhanced regulator -1 complex repair
This ended up feeling the best overall. The shield recharge was good, I could kill people before they took my shields down completely, and I wasn't dying so much. The only weakness is that you end up relying on your armor as your buffer. Normally armor tanks have some sort of shield buffer that resists a bit of damage before damage can eat at their health, but for this fitting it's the opposite.
It's a bit weird, and I ended up keeping an eye on my armor level more than my shields to determine whether or not I could get into another battle. Because of this, I tested one last fitting:
-1 complex damage mod -1 enhanced energizer -1 complex/enhanced plate -1 complex repairer
I thought that maybe I could sacrifice my shield regulator for some more health, but what ended up happening is that the opponents ended up chewing through my armor more because my shields weren't up as often. The slightly slower movement speed didn't help much either. If I was going to try a proto fitting I'd go with one plate, one repairer, and one shield regulator. __________________________
So what do you think? Is a shield based heavy possible? Would a sprint mod/cardio mod work better? Have you had any luck with a fit that I didn't mention? (heavy with two complex sprint mods, energizers, and a shotgun?).
Or do we just need the other racial heavies already (the ones that aren't amarr and will most likely have more slots, cause they're not amarr)? |

All these people complaining about the HMG are probably trying to win a one on one against someone who's 50 metres away with his AR. Unless the AR guy is surprised by your attack you'll usually don't stand a chance.
I have HMG proficiency 4
I know how to use a HMG, but that's with my armor tanked suit and two complex damage mods. I feel like the HMG needs damage mods to be effective at all, and that would take away any ability to focus on shields.
It's just that as a shield heavy I find myself fighting at range instead of close quarters. The reason being that I'm always on the move up on the front lines. I'm trying a different approach with this fitting instead of staying defensive like I normally do. |
