IMO they either need to be removed or heavily reworked.
- Gives too many points for destruction
- Perfect aim in situations where they aren't provoked
- Always in useless spots
- Way too much damage for the rails
The list really could go on. They serve no real purpose but annoying vehicle users (Perfect aim from 400+ meters away while invisible) and farming points.

Nothing new here. We have many such posts and nothing has happened yet.
The instant turn and shoot to a vehicle is pretty irritating when the same turret will Slowly, oh so slowly, turn once an operator has entered it.
The destruction WP is fine. The damage is close to several Large Rail Gun Turrets available to Tanks. About in the mid range so that is not out of line either. It is the perfect aim with near instantaneous rotation that is the problem. This is aggravated by the current draw distance debacle which makes them invisible although CCP/Shanghai claims not to be able to reproduce the problem and as such is not a problem. Odd that.
The reason they are being farmed currently is CCP/Shanghai had a fun collect the goodies event recently. One of the challenges was the destruction of 100 Installations. Well, they have 750/3015 Shield/Armor while Supply Depots and CRUs have significantly more thus requiring more effort. The result of the challenge is that many Mercs discovered the joy of destroying Turrets.
Whenever the Blues (or I) run a Tank the first thing I do is destroy Turrets. Nothing ruins a good Tank battle faster than some Red Turret deciding to get in on the action.
As far as their location the maps are pseudo randomly generated. Each map has a socket location and various sockets (structures, etc) are plugged into the appropriate sized socket. This is done without any recognition that putting a Rail Gun Turret behind the facility is actually a hilariously bad design. Hey! The computer did it! No one to blame here. The level of uselessness would lead one to conclude they are only there to be blown up. Works for me.
I use to make some decent Kills by manning either a Rail Gun or Blaster Turret. Not so much anymore, too many Mercs trying to blow them up quickly.

I like using them for training. When a new player has no idea how the flow of battle goes -I stick them in the turret and let them observe while taking potshots at anyone stupid enough to stand still.
Some turrets have an amazing field of fire, the others are targets of opportunity. Note the difference and use them to your advantage.
A great way to provide suppressing fire/ bombardment. Easy to pop and 100 WP a piece, but not so fragile they die in one shot.
Seriously, whats not to like?
Perfect demonstration of the draw distance bit is on [DOM] Spine Crescent, The northern most rail turret has perfect coverage of the walled entrance to Alpha. Even though you wont see the Merc models, you can pop them as long as you shoot the areas where you would take cover -were you defending it.

I wouldn't be opposed to just removing the AI entirely unless it's provoked but only if all turrets in the redline are removed. Nothing worse than losing an extremely overpriced derpship because some guy just went 1/10 and decided to camp on of the many railguns in the redline because they don't understand how the game works.
I guess I'm just upset because 80% of the dropships I lose are invisible redline rail installations ;_; |
