Myy only problem with trolls is that the internet gives them balls thats they don't have in RL, only people with low self esteem or who been bullied in school can think it's clever to annoy others. I'd say their mothers should get involved and beat decency into them, but I guess they probably eel their school friends do a good enough job ^^ |

That seems precariously close to "they look like they wanted it." Trolls are not bears; and I have met all of one individual who has cheerfully been as abrasive in person as on forums. For the most part, I believe that trolls dig for that reaction because they are feeling powerless in real life--and perhaps confusing "honesty" with "bullying" in their brains would go a long way to helping them start behaving in a more civil sort of manner.

Good for Popular Science. This is the first I've ever heard of such a major publication taking such a stand. But you know what? They choose what letters get published in their magazine, meaning they get to weed out the fundamentalist religious nuts with an agenda, the leftist whack jobs with an agenda, Trolls with no agenda at all aside from lols, and everyone else in between. User comments allow those people to bypass the usual safeguards and make their opinions known no matter how faulty, arbitrary, and well, dumb.
Personally, I'm tired of church going subway sandwich artists trying to debate the existence of climate change with y'know, actual climatologists. Everyone's an expert on everything these days, thanks to wikipedia. Bleh. |
