As a full-time tanker...
Don't throw good after bad, and start really doing your absolute best to never "brute force" your way into a map. In order to make any money with an HAV (At least in Skirmish, the only mode I play) you have to consider which parts of a map you never, ever go in.
Running a blaster fit as Caldari is a very bad idea... Especially with low SP, I only do it if I'm in a weird mood and don't care about wasting ~$520K and preferably have a tanking buddy also running blaster.
Missiles are your friend, so are rails.
In order to make money with Caldari HAVs, you absolutely have to spend money into them, money should never be an issue with HAVs as if you bring one out you need every last edge, as yeah a cheap tank is cheap, but you lose them far easier then the expensive ones.
I never "squad up" unless in my (very small and personal) Corp, most of my work is solo work, and while money is an eternal struggle, you really can make it out there in a "pub-stomping" environment, you just absolutely have to be smart about things, know when to run, know what areas are death traps, know where you have cover and from what angles, NEVER stay in one area for any measurable amount of time (Period.).
Just play a bit smarter, if you really put your mind to it then you can survive, especially since to make a good Caldari HAV fit you need a smidge less SP then the Gallente HAVs.
It's a cruel world, but if you use a Caldari HAV properly you should die usually from other HAVs not infantry... It also helps to stop thinking of the HAVs as a "tank" who can take anything, and more like a mobile weapons platform... |

I also want to stress that any tank Caldari tank that won't die in an eyeblink will cost 500K+ minimum, anything cheaper then that will die at the drop of a hat unless you really just redline-snipe or play extremely conservative.
You can't play a cheap tanker, you just can't.
Cheap fits are garbage, period, if you don't pay for the good stuff then you're going to lose your fits more often then not and in the long run you will hemorrhage money.
HAVs require a drastically different mindset then infantrymen, don't cut corners when it comes to ISK. A cheap Caldari fit is 500K+ A moderate one is 700K+ An expensive Caldari fit is 1 million+
Less then 500K fits are called target practice, and free points for anyone who notices, only good for casual joyrides with friends. |

Tower forging you should either hang back and redline snipe him with cover to cool down, or recall, grab a sniper rifle (I have a few different proto sniper fits just for that purpose), unfortunately there is only so much you can do in this case.
Swarms are really easy to snipe away, and if they are on ground, in the HAV you can usually out-pace them by keeping yourself mobile and fade to a different part of the battlefield if you see them, it can be pretty effective to keep doing this as you end up fighting mainly
AV nade spam is pretty devastating if you run blasters (Or if you camp and snipe, then everyone and their mother sneaks up on you) as you have to get too close to the buggers, hence why I use rails or Accelerated Missiles. I've learned that when fighting infantry, I never enter a city unless I am in a voiced squad with people I know, and even then I consider it a bad idea. Distance is key, and if the infantry are in a place where you have to get closer then 70 meters then it is pretty much a bad idea. Potshots are free, better then closing in, scoring a few more kills then going nuclear due to a bunch of AV/Flux nade spam.
Also, honestly, some tanks are near impossible to tank without a voice squad calling out targets, so don't be afraid to just play like a "coward" for those maps, only rolling out of your base to help a fight where you have a lot of infantrymen, then roll back and just hide at base for a few minutes waiting for the enemy AV to get board and swap fits.
I'd love to tank with you sometime, PM me in-game and I'll try and meet up the next time we are on at the same time.
I understand your frustration, I've been there heh.
PS: Grab some droplinks, my usual tank pilot fit is a crappy two module log suit with a repper (for emergencies when my tank is on fire even after I roll to cover) and droplinks. Dropping out of your tank in very safe spots and dropping the basic Level 3 Droplink in two places on the map will net you a lot of extra points. Place them in parts of the map just outside of your radar of enemy CRUs/Objectives/whatever, by not getting too greedy and placing them just out of sight a short hike away from key locations, your team will usually use them as "shortcuts."
As a last "PS," if you think you might be outclassed in a potential shootingmatch where you know a Forgegunner/Swarm Squad/Enemy Rail tank is camping... Just accept it and don't confront them, not worth the risk. |

Will do the next time I'm on, probably tomorrow night. I'd love to see you become a successful full-time tanker (Or at least half-time), admittedly not an easy goal, and tank squading helps survivability by 600% no joke. I have a corp-mate who also tanks full time, Phixate, and it would be pretty cool to run a three-man tank lance. |
