This is not about if they are OP or UP, or BB (Baby Bear... just right). I have really never seen why people use the ones they use.
I assume the GEK-38 is used because it's the happy medium, its more effective (by itself) than a Standard, but cheaper than the Duvolle.
Excluding a maxed out Skill Branch of the AR. The Duvolle is the best AR (in the fully auto variant). Wouldn't it be practical to use it over the GEK-38 because for the amount of CPU and PG it requires, it has better stopping power?
I know some people who have 3 complex damage mods on their GEK-38. The amount of CPU & PG and ISK that requires is more than the Duvolle(not quite ISK).
I've seen Prototype suits, decked out to the 9s, and they fit a Militia AR(non-blueprint)... why?
So, for all the AR users out there. Why do you use whatever AR you use? Do you weigh it on the amount of ISK it consumes? CPU&PG? Effectiveness? It's versatility?
Do you not worry what AR you use exactly, but focus more on the Kill branch, making any AR effective? |

I use two:
GEK when I want stopping power (the Duvolle is nice, but the cost is not justified for me)
Exile (which is standard BPO) when I am in a mood to make some extra ISK, or when this isn't the focus of the suit - for example I am running solo as a logi - when in a squad as Logi I pick Mass Driver normally for area suppression to support the team)
Note: I am not an exclusive AR user; I often use LR, Shotgun, and Mass Driver depending on my mood. |

I originally went with the GEK + proto suit combo, now I'm going with the basic AR + advanced suit; can't say that the difference has been significant enough to justify using the more expensive combo. I'll still get mowed down by the protos running with Duvolles, but hey, that's why I also pack some RE's to get the last laugh! |

I go duvolle on an advanced suit. 1 dmg mods, and everything else is whatever because you can kill people before they see you. |
