MMOs like world of warcraft constantly throw the word epic around like it's nobody's business these days.
New Raid boss, new gear, new way of fighting with rehashed fights and most of the time a storyline you can care little for.
What makes so many of these events feel unepic? I have to say is the entire lack of difficulty, people just plow through and get measly rewards that are only good for 2 levels into the next expansion.
Special events are at most of the times fun and all but nearly suffered the same fate, with often sometimes the next year's event resulting in similar or updated prizes.
So how what do you think is your epic event?
I will give my example.
FFXIV 1.0
The game was buggy, difficult, required a party to level and was extremely hard. The story was a bit more involving as most quest givers were allotted cutscenes, far less wall of text and more casual talk. As FFXIV continued despite its bad reviews and promises to improve the game the grand companies arose as part of the continuing storyline. The Erozan alliance had to face off against the Garlean Empire, hell bent on domination you come to find out the Legion sent to conquer the three city states had a plan to throw the moon down on the nations because adventurers like your own character was consistently making it difficult for the alliance to be invaded.
The fights leading up to stop the legion commander from smashing the small moon into the land were some of the hardest in recent mmo history, small mistakes were very costly wiping out the entire warband. Some parties began just to form to try and beat the story line, it became more of a quest to not farm bosses but just to down them in the first place to save Eroza. It was equated to blood, sweat and tears in trying to kill white raven as the game's own poor performance itself could render the fight over easily.
In the End the efforts seemed for nothing, the moon continued to descend and the empire forces began to gather.
Before 1.0 shutdown there was a small place you can go and see the red moon ominously floating in the sky. These players decided that the area would most appropriate to bid FFXIV 1.0 farewell and recorded the ending seeing an event unfold for the first time.

I don't know about you but the words going out with a bang doesn't seem to do this one justice. The players who walked the lands, explored the world, made friends with other players and toiled over beating the bosses and suffered through this horrible game to the very end is undeniably profound. |
