there are 4 stats on the leaderboard.
kills warpoints KDR win loss ratio
Kills and warpoints acumulate over time and a player whos played for 6 months doesnt have to be "good" to start climbing the leaderboard, of course they DO have to have the capability to obtain warpoints and get a kill.
Warpoints are very farmable, if you aproch the game as an exersise to farm warpoints its very easy to dominate end of game rankings and obtain large sums of warpoints with effort, and doing so doesnt nessesarily mean you were an asset to your team (although chances are you were so warpoints are a pretty useful stat in game)
KDR leaderboard on its own is useless as people find ways to break the stat and pump their KDR to insane levels and then abandon the character.
Win Loss ratio is probably the best measure of teamwork but isnt invulnerable to stat boosting either.
now theres a problem with the leaderboard if we start tracking the stats as a whole. you would think that you could measure a player by some sort of combination of the above stats and to some extent its true, but the leaderboard will always be dominated by stat boosting. wich in itself isnt exactly the most helpful excersise to the team.
Kills and warpoints measure activity rather then quality, and KDR is an easily manipulated stat that you can boost to somewhat extreme proportions while maintaining your progress with kills and warpoints.
the redline sniper is an excelent example of that, they can get kills and warpoints and expose themselves to very little risk while farming KDR, its not the fastest source of warpoints or kills but its the safest way to boost all 3 stats simultaniously.
that means a redline sniper will climb the leaderboards even though they arnt really helping their team.
i guess the main point is that the leaderboard simply measures player activity rahter then player skill, and while it does take lots of knowledge of the game and its mechanics to climb high its not nessesarily a guarentee that they are the most helpful teamates or that they are a strong asset to a team. but they will probably be the ones who are online and show up to events and PC matches.
TL:DR - leaderboard measures activity not skill and rewards stat boosting rather then quality gameplay |

Mossellia Delt wrote:Should have a leaderboard of what place you usually score on your team. While this is boostable its usually people who play well. The only problem is dropship pilots who do loads of work for no WPs but CCP stated (and heres hoping they follow though) on more WPs, hopefully for dropships in 1.5
our dropship deathsquad averages 2.5k warpoints per person per game for 2 gunners AND the pilot.
thats higher then average for an infantry 7.5k warpoints for a 3 man squad |

Can I get a needle now?
isk destroyed/lost ratio would probably be more apropriate
newberrys would hit the top of the leaderboard using the free starter suits...
vets would permanantly use the free starter suits... |

That just sounds horrible to vehicle ad scout suit users, which currently have to deal with loads of crap.
Nothing like losing a 1.1 mil isk dropship to wonky physics damage.
You two are looking at it from most to least. More is not always better. About that needle...
about htat mass driver.... nobody left to res when you explode to death |

That needle though...
if isk destroyed vs isk lost ratio was the thing people cared about then you would see the rise of the needle :P
acomplishes the same thing without invalidating STD/ADV/PRO gear and vehicles for most players.

Well, if you want to really get into it, people get butthurt over being needled because it still counts as a death. Got to remember that kids these days have fragile egos that is apparently catered by numbers in virtual reality. Granted, ISK destroyed/ISK lost is similar to K/D ratio. It wouldn't stop the kids from hiding out in their spawn with snipers. I see the whole "leaderboard" concept silly. Could use some more needles...
if isk lost/destroyed ratio was the thing people cared about (in eve its used to measure how a war is doing) it would see alot of play in higher tier games as wars shift to be economic rather then pruly territorial.
every needle would save up to 250k off the final totals and over a game millions of isk could be save dna dcould make or break a long running war effort.
to be honest it ALREADY works like that, we just lack the nessesary tools to see and measure it. |
