Made a new character before down time. Servers come back up. Same old, same old. I do a single game of Academy and get the WP required to go to the "big games".
My first game was a stacked lobby against advanced/proto gear. I killed quite a few of them. It took EXO MDs and multiple lasers to kill me. My team lost, of course, but that's not the problem. I thought it was hilarious, to be honest, to go positive with militia gear and no core skills amongst these people.
The problem is not proto or advanced gear either.
It's the lack of something between the games that have them and the Academy themselves. It was... pitiful to gun down the same people that were repeatedly killing my team. I actually felt a bit of pity towards both of them.
More than any amount of text for a tutorial, we need restrictions. More than a balance, we need a way to "nurture" the new bloods. The only reason I could even do what I can right now is because of the crisp hit detection and the AR's need to have a damage decrease. I can't lean on that for long, as this character is going to be full Logistic.
If you need a medic, call Needle Addict. |

If you need a medic, call Needle Addict. I agree. I did the same experiment with a sweet Minmatar hottie i named Dawg Fuud.
Spent not one starting skillpoint and only used the 'Assault' starter fitting, so the character was totally raw and as weak as possible.
Graduated from the academy in one match with 1600 WP and then went positive in a pub skirmish, i forget the score but Dawg Fuud did well - definitely a solid contributor to the team.
The takeaway from our experiments with Needle Addict and Dawg Fuud is that it's not sp or tiered gear that makes the difference, it's DUST-specific player knowledge. Which to me says that the demands for tiericide might be misplaced, and what we should really be focusing on is a high quality NPE hands-on walkthrough tutorial. And a modular on, so CCP can produce it in chunks and players can always go back to the tutorials for practice of when they're changing role and need a refresher. |
