It's extremely subjective, but I have a couple hints for you.
But first I want to answer your questions:
Personally, I'm not having too many problems and I mostly run a CK.0 with ADV weapons and equipment (light, sidearm, grenade and scanner/hives), Complex shield extenders, ADV repper and STD basic plates. That's my suit for 90% of the time. I don't run PRO weapons in public matches, but this suit is still expensive.
Is this my best suit? No, but it is the best I'd ask for a public.
Do I switch to a cheaper fitting if I run into any strong opposition? No.
Do I make money running this suit? No.
Do I run out of money with this suit? No.
If I die twice in a match I'm probably ISK negative, but not by much. Most of the time I die 0-2 times per match, so I'm not losing ISK. However, sometimes the match turns into a perfect hell and I might lose up to 5 suits. These battles suck the ISK I've earned without dying, so my wallet is pretty much stable. The number of kills is not that important, since they have only a limited impact on your final reward. The best goal is not to die, at least for me.
Playstyle is important. I enjoy playing solo as much as running with a squad, but my playstyle does change. There's no way I'm running straight to the battle at the very start of the match, if I'm alone. I play defensively, I try to make a general idea of the battle (what kind of teammates? what kind of enemies? where are they going? what are they doing? Which team is pushing/killing the most? Is my team really trying or they just snipe? which weapons in the killfeed?) before rushing. Instead, when I run with a good squad, I'm much more aggressive. Winning the match is cool, I agree, but if you play solo you must accept there are times when you can't change the battle by yourself... and you can't really count on your random teammates. True story. So yes, playstyle is important and running with a good squad really does help going ISK positive. Keep in mind that there's a huge difference between a "squad" and a "good squad". Joining a random squad doesn't help in that way.
The remaining 10% of the time I just run a cheap fitting to make money and here comes my suggestion:
-As someone suggested, find an effective cheap fitting and use it to farm ISK. I find the Assault G-1 particularly good, thanks to the impressive amount of HP you can get from cheap armor plates and their low CPU/PG cost.
-Pro-tip: You have three character slots. If you want to stay competitive with your main character but you don't want to lose ISK, make a second character and spam Militia suits. If you start to find the game frustrating because Militia suits are paper, upgrade some pieces of equipment of your choice to STD level (even your dropsuit, if you want. An STD assault/logi costs about 3.000 ISK, which is nothing) If your final dropsuit costs less than 10.000 ISK, you will make tons of ISK no matter what. -> Send ISK to your first character. -> Enjoy.
