Fox Gaden wrote:I like your initiative, but how many chat channels do we want to have? Wouldn't it be better for you to help Condor Squad offer more services, rather than creating another channel?
Of course I have not gotten into piloting much yet, so it does not directly effect me, but I am in favor of channel consolidation as I have a lot of Chat channels open already.
Much appreciated. Well I would say, as many needed, but my reasons for making the channel were quite well thought out. It is really offering a very unique experience with a very long and extensive amount of input, feedback, and request from new players and veterans a like. I have no problem offering the information to all dropship squad channels, but the information will be released first in Dust Red Flag channel and this thread. Hopefully people will understand what I am trying to do once it is seen. And if this is emulated by other channels the better I say. |

Gabriella, I'd suggest getting into contact with Adelia Lafayette, he's one of our dropship instructors within D-UNI.

Here you can ask as many questions as you like. Another thing also join the Dust Red Flag public chat so you can ask any questions while in game as well. First thing before modules, if you have not done so already, You need to figure out which type of dropship you are looking into, Caldari or Gallente. Each offers a little something different in play style. Caldari dropships are light in mass, not requiring a lot of input to move it in the desired direction. The Gallente version has a bit more mass and requires more input to move it in the desired direction. There is a nice free PDF that can be downloaded here, that gives prospective pilots a better overview on what is really going on with dropships created a while back: PILOTING 101 PDF Now on to modules! When placing skills currently into dropships, your most important skills to level up are, Turret Operation, Small Missile Turret Operaion, Small Hybrid Turret Operation, Vehicle Armor Upgrades, Vehicle Shield Upgrades, and Vehicle Armor Repair/Vehicle Shield Boost.(Armor Repair for Gallente, Shield Boost for Caldari) I would not get too comfortable with how the modules currently are though. CCP is reworking modules for vehicles at the moment so some of this information will change. If you are piloting Caldari, you want to invest your time in Vehicle Shield Extenders, and Vehicle Shield Hardeners. Your more experienced pilots will usually be running 2 Shield Extenders, and a Shield Hardener in their high module slots. The low module slots perhaps Power Diagnostics Systems , or something else based on preference. An experienced Gallente pilot will probably have an Armor Repairer, Armor Plate, and a Armor Hardener, in the low slots, with a Shield Extender and something else to taste in the high slots. |

WHAT TO DO WHEN THE ENEMY WANTS YOUR DROPSHIP OUT OF THE SKIES?!?!?
A quick tip, for when redline turret installations, forge guns, swarm launchers have you marked for death. They key is teamwork.Tell your squad what and where the problem is coming from. Below is a few list of good request you can ask your fellow squad or team mates to use in keeping your dropship from hurling down to the planet in a ball of fire and scrap metal.
GùÅ Snipers can take out forge gunners from a good amount of distance. A few direct hits from a sniper rifle will make even the toughest heavy toting a forge gun think twice.
GùÅ Swarm launchers can be a huge pain in your rear. For dropship pilots, these guys will die despite knowing they can toss out 1 more volley of swarms at you. Yes its a click and forget weapon, and yes those nasty homing rockets can stay on your heat trail despite fancy flying around objects but you have to make the most of it. Have a few mercs on foot take them out.You can get creative with this. You can load them in the dropship and drop them near or on top of the enemy, or just let them get to them by their own means. Snipers can work on this too, but snipers will have a time killing them as they are constantly moving to avoid being hit while they are locking on to you. (This tactic works well with the way swarms are currently. It may not be viable after 1.6)
GùÅ Redline Turrets can cause you problems with wanting to be a apart of the action. If someone is camping on the turret that you can't reach in the far back, call in help from a squad or team mate to take it out. There are many flavors that can be uses to remove the turret from play. HAV's, Forge guns, and swarms will all do just nicely.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF DROPSHIPS HAVE IN STORE FOR US!?!?!?
If you haven't seen it yet, you should go and check on the forum thread entitled, Vehicle Changes and Beyond - part 2. Everything for dropships along with other vehicles are being reset back to basics. This does sound very bad to those who are happy with the way things are but there are some serious broken things about vehicles that are very broken, being finally addressed since this game was first released in beta. Most who are dropships pilots are understanding in their niche, they call home. With the new vehicle build dropships will not only be something feeling unique but it will also now feel more custom to the role and style of play you choose. What do I mean? Well with war points being issued to dropships, players who wish to play a support pilot role can really be emerged into that specific style of play. Those who want to engage the enemy will also now have their own unique style and those who want it all will certainly not be left out. Below is a list of general things to look for once the new reset comes and remember please leave your feedback to the vehicle changes thread:
Armor Dropships: GùÅ Pure Transport Support Roles - Will be able to land in hotter zones to extract and drop off troops. - Will be able to receive more damage in heavy conflict areas. GùÅ Fire Support/Transport Roles (We will more likely see more evidence of this when other dropship variants return) - Will be able to land in hotter zones to extract and drop off troops. - Will be able to give support fire in hotter zones. - Will be able to recieve more damage in heavy conflict areas.
Shield Dropships: GùÅ Pure Transport Support Roles - Can quickly transport clones much faster in low conflict zones. - Can quickly transport clones near heavy conflict zones. - Great fast recon vehicle - Shield modules have extra attributes. GùÅ Fire Support/Transport Roles (Will likely see more evidence when passive modules are re-introduced). - Can quickly give support in low conflict zones. - Rapid response vehicle for engaging other vehicles, and other targets. (Has an edge in handling over heavier mass dropships). |

IS YOUR SQUAD LEADER USING YOUR DROPSHIP CORRECTLY?
Squad leaders play an important role on the battlefield. They call objectives, attack orders, defend orders, and rally orders.Anything the squad is doing should be dictated, and squad leaders should be marking objectives throughout the battle. These squad icons, besides giving war points, make flying the dropship much less difficult when in the air. It easily paints priorities for the pilot. Below are a few useful tips squad leads should be doing to maximize dropship usage:
GùÅ Rally points for pick-ups and extraction areas. (Ground troops should have loading zone secure from Anti vehicle). GùÅ Attack/Defend orders for dropships to give air support. GùÅ Mark Domination/Skirmish Objectives for hot jumps (Jumps requiring the dropship to only fly over, or hover above the objective for the squad to deploy). ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

HOW TO FLY WHEN AV MAYBE TARGETING YOU.
When flying low or in medium altitudes, try to fly where large structures can cover you from enemy anti vehicles. Especially when hunting for a visual where snipers, forge gunners, and swarm launchers might be.
(Structures can be many things. It consists of buildings, mountains, hills, the MCC, and pretty much anything that you can fly in front or below.)

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT EQUIPPED TO FACE A BETTER FITTED DROPSHIP?
Perhaps you do not have enough skills invested in modules compared to the enemies dropship, or you are flying against a Dust 514 Ace who has committed to shooting you out of the skies. Whether you are flying simply to transport other players across the map, or flying an assault dropship to give support, knowing these few pointers can increase your survivability in whatever type of dropship you call in the skies.
GùÅ Retreat towards friendly anti air weaponry. You can communicate with your squad or team with this much easier if you have a microphone enabled. Your goal is to lead the pursuing dropship somewhere, AV will be waiting on them.
GùÅ Retreat towards friendly redlines if there is no other help you can receive in dealing with the air threat you are facing. Here you can then judge if you should recall your vehicle or if this is a temporary thing that will eventually allow you to go back and engage on your task(s) for that particular match (This does not work on Ambush matches).
GùÅ Luring the enemy next to a friendly turret where a squad or team mate is waiting to shoot at it can be another great help. If no one is manning the turret keep in mind the dropship has to fly close within the turrets current sight.
GùÅ The last would be using great piloting, then fly low and fast. Flying your dropship between, and under objects can keep them from having a good aim on you. Even if you are being pursued by an assault dropship, manning that front gun while trying not to crash and burn is not the easiest task. Also dropships hoover, so if keeping the dropship beneath a certain cover can give you an advantage stay there.

GùÅGùÅGùÅGùÅ DROPSHIP DISCUSSION GùÅGùÅGùÅGùÅ
This governs pilots using the dropship. Currently the new camera/camera revert is excellent with having a great range of understanding what is going around you.As a pilot situational awareness is very important. The issue that is being discussed exclusively effects assault dropships that are piloted by one person, or those looking to make us of the assault dropship's front mounted turret. The camera angle that was presented directly over the nose of the ship was a great one for assault dropships but the lack of visibility in seeing other things, like running into objects and seeing where possible and current threats to your dropship are. Some can say, "Well there is a first person view for aiming with the front turret." Then there are those who can say, "I prefer the over the nose turret view for shooting in the assault dropship." Though I think none are wrong in wanting either. I hope that CCP can eventually have it where players can toggle between all 3, with a simple click of the analog stick. There is a forum post that I have linked below to this discussion, so please give CCP your feedback on the link below.

INERTIA DAMPENERS 101 Anyone who jumps into a dropship should be familiar with Inertia Dampners. If you are not its that very cool thing you do when you jump from high places and you press and hold X until you hit the ground from high places. Most of the time you will be familiar with it from leaving the MCC. Advance use of this built in suit option is anytime you jump from high places. This consists of dropships, tall buildings, high objects, and some mountain terrain. Here are a few proven physics that the inertia dampners can effect when jumping from the dropship:
G¥û When jumping from a dropship at little to no speed, you will mostly fall directly to what is beneath you. G¥û Jumping out of the dropship at high speeds will have you continuing to move in the motion set by the dropship. You can bleed off distance by activating inertia dampeners late. If you need to keep the direction then make sure your inertia dampeners are activated as soon as you can. G¥û It helps when pilots give a countdown on when squads should jump out/deploy over objectives.(If not the pilot then the squad leader heading the assault on the ground.) **If audio is an issue for you then watch for when the first player jumps out of the ship**

AFFECTIVE WAYS TO ENGAGE WITH A DROPSHIP
Below is a nice list of tips that you should be thinking when flying your dropship to engage the enemy or transporting clones across the battlefield.
G£ö When hovering to drop off troops, keep the nose of your vehicle pointed in the direction where enemy activity is and keep your dropship behind cover. This will help you maintain a visual of where most things are looking to shoot you down, while being able to support friendlies with vehicle turrets. It also acts as a tactical retreat area for infantry or loading zone.
G£ö Do not linger for too long. When giving support fire, it is very important that you do not linger when engaging. You want to lay down as much support fire then either fly away from the engagement, or fly and hover in a new attack angle. This will keep you from being surprised by infantry, and throws the enemy off balance on where to focus their attention.
G£ö When transporting troops, make sure you know the spot where you are deploying team/squad mates to. The last thing you want to do is drop them were they will all be instantly killed. Communicate with the squad leader on what position he wants them all to jump out at. Their are many different types of deployments available. HALO jumps, which are high altitude jumps from the dropship, and your basic altitude jumps. Lastly there is hovering the dropship or landing it for infantry to hop out. Low hovering, and landing are better reserved for deploying troops near hostile areas when the need of flanking or adding reinforcements is needed to an objective.
G£ö Fly back towards friendly redzone, or another safe area until needed. Flying back to a known safe area will greatly keep your presence down, and AV from mustering a counter on you. The great thing about dropships is that they can travel very quickly across the map when needed.

LOGISTICS DROPSHIPS AND MOBILE CRU'S
Here are some tips for dropship pilots equipped with a mobile CRU, and special squads deploying from dropships.
Gÿ¢ Want the squad to get to an objective quick without having to wait and load them all into the dropship? Have them wait to spawn until the dropship is in the air can save your squad and team plenty of time. Gÿ¢ Is your squad equipped with what they need to capture an objective? Having a squad with logistics, scout, heavy, assault can make taking an objective much easier, when deploying from the dropship. Simple things like one player supplying nanohives, triage tool, mass driver, HMG, Assault weapons etc. can tip the fight in your favor. Also one of my favorite is squad/team mates leaving a nice pack of remote explosives, on an objective for those wishing to hack places while your team is away at another current objective. Gÿ¢ Your clone must reach 0 before you can respawn on a mobile CRU. Unlike objectives, standard CRU's, and drop uplinks, which you can spawn while your current clone bleeds out. Gÿ¢ If an assault is needed on a particular objective. Make sure someone has uplinks when jumping out of the dropship. The mobile CRU on the dropship is great but having an uplink on the ground can get troops into battle quicker when clones are quickly dying or to much resistance is being met. Gÿ¢ If an objective is being over run or too much time is being taken on an objective, have them rally into the dropship. Once everyone has spawned in the Logistics dropship/Mobile CRU equipped dropship, look for a more easier objective.

AFTERBURNERS AND OVERDRIVES
Most understand what Afterburners are and their general purpose, but what use are those Overdrive modules!?!?!? Below is a few tips to effectively use both modules, and perhaps a few tricks you never thought about using with those modules.
G£ê Afterburners do temporarily increase dropship speed, but where it really excels in is how fast it can boost your climbing speed for altitude. When you are being shot at by forge guns, HAV's and installations, being able to distance more meters from your enemy upwards is much safer, than trying to fly off north, south, east, or west. The smallest adjustment you make while climbing throws off these Anti Air from shooting you down can be a big advantage if played right to give you the chance to stay in the air longer.
G£ê When using an afterburner to clear distance across the battlefield. It's best used on module set-ups needing rapid response for your squad/team. This use of afterburner is better suited for Assault, Militia, and Standard dropships.
G£ê Afterburners are great for dropship -vs- dropship engagements. The dropship that can gain altitude faster will have a better chance to win the dogfight, by placing front and side turrets directly over the enemy.
G£ê When outgunned or the odds are not in your favor the afterburner can be your ace up your sleeve. It can help you get back to your sides friendly red zone, or if your an ace, you can get creative when pursued by enemies with activating the after burner module.
G£ê Overdrives gives your dropship torque! Having an overdrive module equipped to your dropship ensures that you will gain top speeds much faster in the desired direction you are going. These modules are better suited for assault dropships, and other dropship load outs with lighter mass.
G£ê Overdrive module is one of an ace Caldari pilot's favorite low slot module. Caldari dropships are already nimble. Adding a overdrive module to it just increases its agility, making quick air to ground support for less complex. With the added torque and advance use of your dropships thrusters, you can be a very hard target to aim at in the skies. Perfect for giving you a more aggressive edge in the air.

ALPHA FOXTROT UNIFORM: How TO MAKE THE BEST OF BAD AIR SITUATION
If you haven't guessed, this is all about what to do when your dropship's air time is nearly up. Be it a forgegun, HAV, installation, or another dropship. This is to help you make the best of the situation no matter what type of dropship you are flying.
* Understand your surroundings. When your ship is crashing and burning, you want to move to a strategic place. Ways to find an objective to move towards is to survey the most you can before jumping out of the ship.
* If there is another friendly dropship or vehicle around, give as much information to your squad/team about what shot you down. This can help in removing the threat, or warning other vehicle users to stay clear of an particular area until something has been planned to be done.
* Equipment will help you after being shot down. Be it scanners, drop uplinks, explosives, or nano hives, carrying equipment can either help your clone survive and carry out orders. Scanners can give enemy positions as you move through enemy lines. Uplinks can give your squad/team an spawning point to assault an important objective. Explosives can help you escape pursuing enemies. Nano hives can resupply you with ammo and repair armor, depending on the type you have equipped.
* Put as much distance from you and the crashed dropship as possible.Chances are the jolly mob, or enemy isn't done with just shooting you out of the sky.

CALDARI -VS- GALLENTE The biggest difference between Caldari and Gallente dropships are how they operate once in the air. The Caldari dropship is naturally more nimble, able to strafe with ease, left to right, backwards, and forward with little to no problem. It's concentration on shields allows it to go at much more of an more aggressive approach towards hostile areas, while being able to exit once danger persist to the dropship. The Gallente variant excels in being able to take much more damage compared to its Caldari variant. It has more mass giving it a much better diving top speed but be careful not to over do it at low altitudes, or you will find yourself in the warm grip of gravity. Play this vehicle variant strengths with its high speed dives, and straight angles of flight and you will do fine.
Some tactics these two types share is the basic of flight. If you haven't seen Judge Rhadamanthus videos, or even heard of them, well then that should be your first go to. You want to concentrate on grasping how to dive and use the environment as cover. Below is the 7 most undeniable laws of the dropship.
G¥¦ Avoid using the dropship like you would a HAV. That is not it's intended purpose. Like the scout on the ground, you play a support vehicle role. Cover fire, special tactical assaults, and transport are your best roles.
G¥+ You are the ultimate intel/information giver, surpassing a scout on the ground. Dropships can see everything that is going on in the sky. They know what objectives are left unguarded, and where the main focus of fighting is taking place. You have the power to lead your team into victory with information alone!
G¥+ You as a pilot are the Percision Strike multiplier! Your eyes in the sky also gives the best information on where to drop that Precision Strike.
G¥¦ Hoover in one area too long can be dangerous! You want to limit your time in one spot, then move to another angle, rotating constantly. This confuses attacking ground forces, and makes it more difficult for anti air to shoot you down.
G¥+ Situational awareness is king/queen. You must be aware of what is going on around you at all times.
G¥+ When fighting another dropship the most important thing to remember is play your dropships set-up to your advantage. Once the deployment of 1.7 this will be an even more important, taking it as far to your modules making them play even a more important role.

ARIAL ASSAULT 101
Arial Assaults are probably one of the less used tools on the battlefield. Here are a few compiled tips this week for using your squad/teams dropship in air support.
Gÿá Ground squad leaders should call in arial support for areas causing the squad or team issues. Gÿá When friendly fire is active it is important to know from your squad lead how close you giving support fire from the dropship to eliminate friendly deaths. Gÿá Always remember the longer you linger in an area giving support fire the enemy is planning a counter to your dropship. Gÿá Always keep moving to different angles of attack with a dropship to keep the enemy confused. Gÿá Dropships can support HAV's and LAV's being their much needed eyes in the sky, scouting much further ahead of them or giving flanking to support fire.
