Frontline: The main force on the frontline. They work together as a team, each providing specialties and equipment which benefit the squad as a whole.
Frontline Infantry: Medium frame Infantry working as a squad on the front lines to take or defend objective.
Frontline Heavy Infantry: Heavy Infantry supporting Frontline Infantry squads with heavy weapon fire. They add additional fire power, while relying on the rest of their squad to support them.
Flanker: Guards the main forceGÇÖs flanks, and attacks the flanks of the enemy. Causes distraction and disruption of the enemy force. An active scanner is helpful in this role.
Infiltrator: Uses stealth to work behind enemy lines or even to attack within the enemyGÇÖs formation. Heavy reliance on stealth and speed.
Hunter: Tracks down lone enemies such as Snipers and Infiltrators and takes them out. Speed and endurance mods are often used because the Hunter has to travel great distances. Stealth also helps in this role.
Medic: Any suit that equips a Nanite Injector, but not an Armour Repair.
Logi Bro: Anyone with an Armour Repair, but usually a Logi suit with Armour Repair and Nanite Injector.
Combat Engineer: Logistics suit that does not fit an Armour Repair. GÇ£IGÇÖm not that kind of logi!GÇ¥ The Combat Engineer focuses on supporting their squad/team with Drop Uplinks, NanoHives, Scanning, Remote Explosives, etc.
Demolitions Expert: A logistics suit with more than one Explosive fitted. Usually any other modules included in the fit will be intended to help with demolitions work, such as a Nano Hive to replace explosives, or an Active Scanner to know when an enemy solder is in your trap.
Overwatch Sniper: Sniper, usually located in an elevated position with a view of the battlefield. The Overwatch Sniper is responsible for keeping their squad informed of enemy troop movements, and providing cover fire for the squad; as well as taking out enemy Snipers, enemy AV, and targets of opportunity.
Marksman: A medium frame suit with a Sniper Rifle and highly skilled sidearm, or a Commando suit with Sniper Rifle and mid/short ranged weapon, who does Frontline Infantry work, as well as providing anti-Sniper support. This is the guy who picks that Forge Gunner off the top of a building when his squad is pinned down.
Assassin: A Scout suit with Sniper Rifle and highly skilled sidearm. Uses stealth to find targets of opportunity, whether it is shooting an AV Infantry off the top of a hill at 400m, or shooting a hacker in the back of the head for 2m. Ninja AssassinGÇÖs par Nova Knives with their Sniper Rifles.
Ninja: Uses Nova Knives as their primary weapon. Normally a Scout (often Minmatar for speed and melee bonus) who uses stealth and speed to take their victims unaware.

This is really a work in progress at this point, and I am open to debate, or suggestions. I am trying to build a community consensus on terminology for battlefield roles. I will be continuing to edit this list, and I am interested in your thoughts and suggestions on the subject.
I may also add a glossary for other terms as well, which is why I reserved so many posts. |

At this point Vehicles roles seem to be Tank, LAV, and Dropship and have not coalesced into well defined sub roles yet. I think as we get more variety of vehicles and racial variants we will start to see well defined subcategories develop. That is one reason I have reserved plenty of extra space. |

The vehicle section will probably have to wait til after 1.6, hopefully, but a good starting point would be sniping tanks vs. close support. Dropships could be split into ADS-tank killer, ADS anti-infantry, and troop delivery (any mCRU fit). Good point about Sniper tanks versus close support. I called close support GÇ£FrontlineGÇ¥ but I would be open to another name if a better one was suggested. I was also able to break out the LAV a bit more. Does anyone know what we would call a LAV setup where the turret was actually used to provide cover fire, rather than simple as a way to keep a passenger entertained? |

Oh I donGÇÖt mind if the discussion wanders a bit. I have the posts I need reserved. Sometimes interesting things come out of a conversation taking the scenic route.
My Alt Crash Gaden put his first 2 million skill points into LAVGÇÖs, but then I discovered that I am a terrible driver. I should get back into experimenting with LAVGÇÖs again, but first I should probably make a brick tanked Heavy suit for when using the turret. |

PR DIABOLITO NY wrote:I heard a good one this weekend. Somebody used the phrase 'brawler tank vs. sniper tank.' I thought it was a catchy term for a frontline 'assault' tank. Diabolito Now that you mention it, I believe I have heard that term too. We will go with that. |

I thought the turret damage was reduced on Logi LAVs? |

Updated the link section to add the HMG Heavy guide.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else, there is the Learning Coalition.
