Aa I can the Dust514 rp community is finally getting going I thought a post for tips and advice would be useful.
Mine are
If u don't know the world setting keep your character simple.
Don't go looking for fights with other players, it's a fast way to **** people off and get excluded.
Employ common sense, if your character acts like a **** then other peoples characters will just ignore him/ avoid him just like in RL
If your more experienced play a character that has diffrent moral views to you iv always found it fun :-)
last and most important have fun :-) but not at expense of others |

I'm new to RP myself, but I'm hoping I won't do horribly since I write some fiction so I know about characterization. Still advice is advice and right now I'll take good advice since I'm the new guy. |

A big part of it is making sure a character is workable. As a Gm iv had to ban more than one character because frankly the group he was with would kill him on the spot. That said once he learned how to keep it stuble it lead to great plot developments like framing a a princes goul as a member of the society of Leopold. (for none WoD peeps epic ballsy move :-D) |

One of the most important tips for RP is to avoid Mary Sue characters. Basically Mary Sues characters are characters that are near-perfect, have no flaws whatsoever, have performed impossible feats lightly or anything. In example, if your character is a direct descendant to empress Jamyl, have the ability to fly capsules and fight on the ground at the same time and never fail a gunfight, you should reconsider using that character. Not only are Mary Sues annoying to other characters, they're boring to play.
And another thing is to keep IC and OOC separate, socially too. It means that if you happen to dislike a person in real life, the hatred shouldn't carry over to the character he is playing, unless you have a valid IC reason. Same works vice versa. |

I also suggest to read about the EVE lore before you making your character background story. So that you can make a character that will make sense with EVE lore. In made this character to do some RP and I still developing a story for him.
But yeah good tip, if you're not used to RP try to keep things simple and always research about the lore, it help loads. Try the EVElopedia, excellent source of info. |

A few notes on keeping IC and OOC separate:
* It's easier said than done. OOC knowledge (stuff you know, but your character doesn't-- the origins of the DUST implant is a prime example) is not only tempting but difficult to avoid over time, as your memory of where you got the knowledge may fade while the knowledge itself remains strong.
* By the same token, it's best not to share any OOC information you don't want making an appearance in-character.
* At least as important as not taking OOC likes and dislikes IC is the reverse. This is a dark setting with few unambiguous heroes, and some of the people around you will be playing flat-out villains. It's possible to overdo villainy, but the really well-played ones will add a great deal to the RP experience. Do not confuse player and character morality; you're most likely mistaking James Earl Jones for Darth Vader. |

When I think of a few more tips I will post them, but here are some off the top of my head:
1. Lore up. Like, hardcore. While lore might present the issue of accidently leaking knowledge that your character shouldn't know into your roleplay, it is also a must if you ever want to make a character that really fits into new eden. thinking if it as if you were spending skill points. If you are going to be a caldari player, than you can spec into Caldari lore to prioritize your time. I can get away with not knowing much about Amarr lore. Why would I? It is hard enough learning the history of one planet, much less an entire universe of vast empires. Besides giving you background information and keeping posts accurate, it also helps you build your character.
2. Character development. Okay, so you are looking back on the character you have made and you don't really like him. No big deal. A massive part of the IGS for me is the concept of character development. It helps you feel out all aspects of a character until it fits you like a suit and you can swap into character without even thinking about it. Over time you can forge and shape a character, which is why it is important to have a character that you can play with for a bit before laying down a backstory and forming a persona. I am still forumlating who Galm is to this day, and I like to think he is trying to figure himself out to. Aren't we all? Experiment. See what feels right. Work with it, then make it your own.
3. Don't fall into archetypes. New Eden is a ball of wibbley-wobbley moral shades of grey. Often times life isn't a game of good versus evil, but where you were born and which truth you believe. Even factions you may hate with a burning passion may prove to be not all that different from yourself from a different point of view. Are the Dragonaurs just heartless terrorists, or is there something more behind their armor? We need to ask questions like this to do this world we have to play with justice. Strictly speaking, I have yet to mark anyone in the Summit as a hero or a villian yet. We are all just people trying to live another day.
After all, in my mind Galm is anything but a hero. |

A genre note on heroism and villainy:
New Eden, like the movie "Blade Runner," is placed in a sci-fi "noir" setting. This means that it's short on untainted goodness, but absolutely packed with moral significance. Factions won't break down into "good" and "evil"; rather, they break down by nationality, culture, faith, political philosophy-- the usual things people break themselves down according to.
That said, characters, regardless of origin and regardless of philosophy, have moral choices to make. Your character can try to walk the (or "a") path of righteousness. This is likely to hurt, a lot, and it should. Noir, as a genre, is largely about moral choices and their consequences, which, whether the choice is for good or ill, always involve suffering.
Not all moral struggles need be about the same things; not every Amarrian is going to struggle centrally with the morality of slavery, nor the Matari with the morality of revenge. Whatever your character's issues may be, you might sometimes be purer than the next guy, or become corrupt; almost everybody in such a setting will do a bit of both. A hero will not be untainted, and the best villains have a touch of honor or some similarly sympathetic quality about them.
The setting is cast in shades of gray, tending towards the darker end. Power, especially, casts a long, dark shadow-- and our characters are all, all, powerful people. It is difficult to hold this kind of power in this kind of setting without finding reasons to use it. |

One thing I've noticed in my short time reading more interactive RP, like the Folkvangr bar and interacting with the whole scene I put up, is that there is a lot of give and take in interactions. One must be willing to compromise and that makes it all the more interesting. For me at least. |

Thats a key point character interactions have tp make sense stealing somthing from my drama classes your character will have an objective so match his personality to the obv and characters become a lot more organic and can even evolve |

Also, if you have to, write down the basic info on your character: looks, (vague, if needed) past, general opinions they may have on certain subjects(you can always get more specific later).
This goes a long way to helping you stay IC. |

By the way, have some fun with your character's aesthetics. If you character sticks to stock clones, than have some identifying marks on his combat suit. It could be an emblem, nose art, it could even be a smiley face key scratched into the helmet. If your character has a leisure clone, than New Eden holds a variety of augmentations that can make it your own. Get creative!
(And yes, your leisure clone could keep some augmentations for a while despite the constant jumping between bodies. Clone jumping could keep one clone in one part of the universe that you could snap to in an instant and revive from storage. Hence my justification for why Galm is always in and out of the IGS.)

My tip is just about EVE lore.
Learn it.
Also decide how your character will feel about the lore.
Its fine to keep loyal and state such, like I do, but never constantly push those views given suitable and logical evidence against such. On more than one occasion I have refrained from posting because I knew I could not argue the point well enough, or someone had said something I could not refute.
And on more than one occasion I have been so irritated by such fanatical RP that I have removed myself from the argument because the guy has just made me into something my character is not. |

Some good tips here. I only this week started my first attempts at anything RP ever but made sure that I'd spent a good day reading up on the lore section of Evelopedia first. Think about everything that could be relevant to your story and make small references to things that subtly shape the story. Think about how you would tell someone about yourself in real life - you likely wouldn't go into great detail about some place you passed when travelling somewhere else but you might say you didn't like the look of the dirty industrial district on the way to Intaki's tropical shores.
I'd also advise reading as many of the EvE Chronicles as you can - they'll give you some great ideas to incorporate; just try not to get your character too deeply involved in it all or you're gonna sound like you're trying to change the universe. Remember, we are all just specks of dust ;) |
