It was not a review, I may have missed the actual review due to complications from moving (didn't get GI for a good 5 or 6 months). I remember reading the article (which did not have many positive things to say about Dust) and quickly moving on. At the time, when I thought F2P I thought smart phone market games, and that kept me from jumping in.
I had vaguely heard about Dust before this, but I don't remember where and my knowledge about the game was virtually non existent.
I got into Dust because I have very few games (i'm extremely picky about which games I keep, I don't even buy a game anymore unless I feel like I could keep coming back to it and having fun for at least 2 years) and I had just gotten strung out on Skyrim again. I got on PSN, not looking for Dust, but knowing that F2P had started to creep onto consoles, and I figured i'd grab a crappy little free game to entertain me for a few days. That was like 2 months ago, and I haven't played anything but Dust since.
Anyway, my point is advertisement for Dust should be stronger/more abundant. I know CCP is working with a smaller advertising budget than say a Triple A title, and i'm sure they have future advertising plans. I look at the forums and see so many with the "come back in a few months to see how things have changed" mindset, and that's all fine and good. But what about those who never check it out? Many won't "come back and see", because they were never here to begin with. I for one was pretty surprised to learn of the continuing activity and intensity of development on Dust when I started. The game is "out of Beta" (I know some chuckle at this) yet CCP is still hard at work adding to and fixing Dust.
I'm no marketing exec, and maybe I've just missed the lions share of Dust advertising, but I would imagine it would behoove CCP to pick a point (maybe post 1.5) where they can say "we are ready to introduce a whole new group of people to Dust", then go on an extremely aggressive marketing campaign. Let everyone know Dust is here, it's undergone some work, and there is still a ton of new **** coming.
I for one will be here until they shut the servers down whether that's in a year, or 10 years, because at the end of the day I enjoy the game. I've thrown down a little cash, getting ready to throw down some more. Hoping to see Dust floating around on my PS3 for many years to come.
