Quote:They are a completely selfish role, they often wait to shoot so they can steal a kill, even if it cost their ally a fitting. That isn't a sniper you're describing. It's an idiot with a sniper rifle. There's a difference.

Quote:The only snipers I have much respect for are the Tac Snipers that get up near the battles(obviously not in them, but not 250m away on a mountain), and ones that provide overwatch with a mic, or (even better) a flux scanner. Obviously never had a good sniper save your life. They're rare, but valuable, teammates.
And as mentioned, Tac Snipers have more of a focus on long range, not less. They're usually the ones found further back, with a longer zoom range. They also have lower damage per shot and only 3 shots per clip, making them the most likely to hold fire until the target is weakened before finishing the job.
A good sniper can often cover 2 or 3 objectives in a Skirmish match and while they won't lock those points down solo, they can stall any hack attempts for long enough to see reinforcements clear the position. A good sniper in Ambush will take the shots they can get, kill or assist, and will preferentially target enemies that threaten their teammates (or the sniper themselves). A good sniper in Domination will control key routes leading to the objective and funnel the enemy into killzones for the rest of the team to exploit.
That's not to say everyone who claims to be a sniper is good though. There are a lot of idiots who think that having a sniper rifle on their fitting makes them a sniper, but they don't play the role. They watch their teammates die, then "avenge" their teammate so they get the kill, or "save" a teammate who's about to win the fight without their help. They collect kills, and don't provide any meaningful support, and as mentioned, while that may help in Ambush (if you can stay ouf of the way), it's a waste of effort in Skirmish and Domination. |
