The first is that people often choose their race because of how the suit looks when they first fire up the game, and won't appreciate that it will have significant and permanent gameplay consequences. Even if you explain the consequences, they haven't played the game yet, so can't make an informed decision. "Plasma Cannon" may sound cool in reading the description, but when the get in game, they realize it's not fun and that they choose the wrong race.
The second is that it doesn't allow for flexibility.
The third is that it's not done in EVE, and I think most EVE pilots are pretty happy about this.
I think the better option would be to have the starter fits better reflect the racial archetypes of the player's chosen race. Again, this would have to wait until CCP gets the rest of the racial content out there and balanced. Um what? This is exactly what's done in eve through bonuses to your races weapon or equipment (such as drones) and is varied from ship to ship but it's almost always for their race for example the rifter I believe has a rof increase to projectile weapons and something else I can't remember. This is what I'm trying to get in dust but just a bit more simplified. In EVE, you can have an Amarr character trained in Minmatar ships/weapons and will be equally effective with those ships/weapons as a native Minmatar pilot using them with equivalent skills (although his Amarr colleagues will probably give him dirty looks). I suppose their is a misunderstanding here, I'm not proposing that the bonus be locked by what race you choose but rather the suit the gear is put on. Dust is all about doing what you like, I wouldn't want to see that change. Ah, in that case +1. I think the suits should have better bonuses to reflect their racial play style. I suspect this isn't yet the case because there is so much missing content. Hopefully as CCP fills this in, they can move further in this direction.
It also makes sense that racial weapons would be more compatible and designed to work with their respective suits. Plus it might have some balancing advantages against using the best of everything. |
