I've played the single-player of the original on PS2 (didn't have online back then), as well as Freedom Unite on PSP. For those that just want to know what the game is about and nothing more, that's easy: Monster Hunter (MH) is about slaying dragons and getting loot from them. To MH vets: I know they don't call them dragons in the game, but Skyrim does (in MH, a Skyrim dragon would be called a "psuedo-wyvern")
Little tip for those playing the PSP versions: Find an app on your PS3 store called "AdHoc Party". Basically, it lets you use the PS3 to bypass the AdHoc-only limit and play MH over the Playstation Network. Only real setup is to pair the PSP's wifi with the PS3, and to make sure you use an Ethernet cord instead of wifi to connect the PS3 to the Internet. Techhie stuff out of the way:
Earthshatter's dragonslaying guide: MH for noobs.
First off, Monster Hunter makes wide use of the term "wyvern". Wyverns are basically two-legged dragons, and they are plentiful in this game world. Don't worry, there's also a few varieties of true dragons - called Elder Dragons - as well.
Combat: Essentially, MH is a thinking man's "hack-n-slash" brawler. Large enemies telegraph their attacks in various ways, and your job is to read those cues and act accordingly while keeping a tactical advantage over the monster. When it starts limping, you can decide to either finish it off or capture it - each has its own rewards. These cues can be as subtle as how quickly a creature turns to face you, or as obvious as a Rathalos grabbing at the air before a Poison Claw attack. Attacking revolves around striking soft spots (most are weak in the belly) and breaking certain parts to increase your loot.
I had a full weapons guide typed, then decided it would turn people off, so i'll just talk about some favorites of mine.
Favorite weapons: Gunlance and HH. One is a nasty surprise hiding behind a wall of steel, while the other one is a critical asset to group hunts.
Favorite Monsters: Rathalos. The 'los is just a classic MH beast - covered in blood-red spikes and panting flames when it's ticked off, i'll bet you always remember your first encounter with him. Especially since the first encounter is likely in a low-tier quest long before you have the know-how and weapons to actually fight him.
Favorite Armor and Weapon Set(melee): Ukanlos(armor) and Nargacuga(weapon). Ukanlos armor looks like a Stormtrooper was melded with an F-117 stealth bomber. Narga weapons have an extremely high critical-hit chance, and are the sharpest weapons in the game. Sadly, the bonuses of the Ukanlos set don't work well with Narga.
Favorite Weapons (Ranged): Teostra Heavy Bowgun and Dragonwood Cannon. The Teo gun is a bright-red medieval cannon that can fire large amounts of Fire Shells. The Dragonwood Cannon is a wooden frame with a Chinese lionhead for a barrel, and it actually roars when it fires!
Favorite thing I haven't seen: Switch Axe. Introduced in Tri, the SA can physically transform from an axe into a sword (and back) at-will, even during a combo! No, I do not think it can cut down trees.
(note: all notes and knowledge is based on Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PSP) |

Zero Harpuia wrote:I wish I knew why I found him so hard. Like I said before I may have just been using incompatible weapons, but I have yet to finish forging my Gunlance to check. I suppose every player has that one monster, and Diablos and Black Diablos might be mine... in MHFU, mine was the Black Gravios. Could never figure out how to get away from that beam-sweep attack. When i did kill him, it was either with a team or by spamming every bomb and paralysis-inducing item I could carry. |

Zero Harpuia wrote:Thanks, I may just be using the wrong weapons. I specialize in Switch Axe and Dual Swords with a minor in SnS and Heavy Bowgun, so I'm probably just gimping myself. Out of that list, I would take the Heavy Bowgun, fit the Shield attachment, and carry as many Shock Traps and Sonic Bombs as possible. Using an HB, you should be focusing less on jamming its horns in the wall, and more on bombarding the head with Crag S - the stunned status lasts far longer, and the stun damage stacks with Hammer hits when teamed up. The Shield is there because you aren't able to dodge very well with the HB unsheathed. Of course, always carry Normal L2 when your other shells run dry. Other shot types to use: Sleep S: when a monster is sleeping, the strike that wakes it deals 3x damage. Put it to sleep, then shoot at a Large Barrel Bomb+ to do serious damage. Pierce: Aim just below the head when he faces you, or across the wings to ensure the shot travels through as many body sections as possible. At close range with no Pellet, shoot through the leg up into the opposite wing. Normal S lvl 3: L3 ammo ricochets off whatever damageable item or monster it hits. Aiming for the belly or legs can cause multiple hits, as well as shooting the frill from behind. Pellet: There's something about Diablos that just makes it easier to hit with Pellet rounds. In some cases, I use it even more than Pierce for its damage potential Elemental: I don't think Diablos is particularly weak to an element, but I always used Thunder and Water S because they behave like Pierce shots do, which is good when your Pierce S runs dry. Para S: if your HB can fire it, take it. 8 L2 shots will paralyze about twice, carrying L1 will let you paralyze probably another two times. |

New section: Book of Combos Many seasoned vets know the various crafting recipes by heart, but i'm sure that some draw a blank as to why that Kelbi Horn is lit up in the combination menu, or something of the sort. For said vets, go ahead and look - you may have one of the more obscure recipes blank still. Here is a list of the recipes I remember well enough to post. For the sake of simplicity, I assume you already know how to make Potion, Mega Potion, Antidote, and Paintballs.
Catalyst: Bitterbug + Honey
Bomb Material: Sap Plant + Stone Flash Bomb: Flashbug + B.M. Smoke Bomb: B.M. + Ivy Poison Smoke Bomb(Collect bug-monster mats!): B.M. + Toadstool Sonic Bomb: Gunpowder + Screamer(frequent reward for Cephalos quests)
Net: Ivy + Spiderweb Pitfall Trap: Net + Trap Tool Shock Trap (can stun creatures too small for Pitfall): Thunderbug(?) + Genprey Fang Lightning Rod (calls down thunder on rainy days): Thunderbug + Burst Arrowana
Small Barrel Bomb(time-bomb): Fire Herb + Small Barrel Small Barrel Bomb+: SBB + Burst Arrowana
Gunpowder: Fire Herb + Nitroshroom Large Barrel Bomb (detonated by any damaging attack): Large Barrel + Gunpowder Large Barrel Bomb+: LBB + Bomb Arrowana
Drugged Meat (bait that induces sleep): Raw Meat + Sleep Herb Tainted Meat (bait that paralyzes): Raw Meat + Parashroom Poison Meat (self-explanatory) Raw Meat + Toadstool
Demondrug (raises Attack): Catalyst+Power Seed Mega Demondrug (raises Attack further): Demondrug + Honey Demon Flute (group Attack buff): Mega Demondrug + Flute
Lifecrystals: Godbug + Wyvern Fang Lifepowder (Group-heal, Mega Potion-grade): Lifecrystals + Wyvern Claw (the fangs/claws could be backwards) Health Flute (reusable group-heal): Lifepowder + Flute
Nutrients(raises max Health, no heal): Godbug + Blue Mushroom Mega Nutrients(Raises max Health further, no heal): Nutrients + Honey Max Potion(Maxes and full-heals max Health): Mega Nutrients + Lifepowder
Ancient Potion (Maxes both Stamina and Health, and heals them): Dragon Toadstool + Kelbi Horn (use Combo Books to make, this only has a 55% starting success rate!) |

Zero Harpuia wrote:Some of these have changed overtime, or at least for the third season. MH4 just came out, so no idea what they are there yet. For example, the Mega Drugs need Pale Extract, a drop from the Flying Wyvern Gigginox, instead of Honey. They probably thought it was too easy to get them with Honey :3 Also, Ancient Potion is now Kelbi Horn + Immunizer. Immunizer increases red health regeneration speed, and is a Dragon Toadstool and a Catalyst. Furthermore, traps are now used abit differently. Some monsters, like Nargacuga, are too smart to fall for a pitfall trap unless they are enraged, so a Shock Trap works better for them. Shock is also the only trap to use in underwater hunts. Furthermore, some enemies react especially to traps, like a Zineogre will steal the charge from the Shock Trap and go into rage mode, an Agnaktor's lava armor will soften when it falls into a pitfall trap and the magma beneath it, and a Glacial Agnaktor's permafrost armor will re-solidify if buried in the ice via Pitfall. And yes, it is Thunderbug :3
Derp, Ancient Potions always needed Immunizer. I'll update my post straight away. Also derp, i think the mega Drugs always needed Pale Extract - they used to drop from the Khezu, so it's interesting to hear it drops from a new monster now.
Narga's always done that, and it's also notable that you have to enrage Narga to cut the tail. Also, they're quite susceptible to a well-timed Sonic Bomb. I'm guessing the Agnaktors you refer to were originally Akantor and Ukanlos in MHFU?
