We're a pressure valve for tensions that would otherwise send us to war properly, soldier. The "faction war" is a limited conflict so tied up in rules and restrictions as to be virtually a sporting event. Expecting either side to emerge victorious for long is a short road to disillusionment: such ambitions will not, cannot, be achieved without the war widening.
The empires are playing for what they consider acceptably small stakes. (I'll leave to Mr. Kalamari any remarks about the implications of the Intaki homeworld being one of the stakes the Federation has anted up.) Raising them higher means changing the game, and the State has spent a century fortifying itself for that larger game. This shouldn't be mistaken for actually wanting to play it, but it's certainly not the most unacceptable option (that would be "surrender").
You may be willing to play that larger game, soldier, but happily your rulers are not so enthusiastic. Best content yourself with playing a part in the blood-sport negative-feedback pressure-valve that is the Empyrean War.
The war we fight is not without point, soldier, but "victory" is not that point. |

I knew the amarr were weak but come on. You're in no significant danger of that, sir knight. Total domination of the limited engagement zone is just that-- total conquest of a non-expanding zone of outlying border planets that no empire holds in high enough esteem to fight over for real (and again I'll leave the remarks about the implications for the esteem the Federation holds the Intaki in to Mr. Kalamari).
It's a proxy war, a pressure valve for tensions that must not be allowed to explode. If you lose the whole of the Bleak Lands, you'll still be able to turn the tables; it's just that the Empire will functionally be a slightly smaller for a bit and the Matari might recover some more of their friends and relations.
In the meantime, you are aiding us in the State by aiding an allied power. So, good hunting. |
