Second best. Chromosome was better in nearly every way.
However, we don't get to reverse this ride so will go in the direction CCP/Shanghai is headed in; Expensive SP to grind the wheels of DUST forward.
1.4 is a definite improvement in the Uprising version of DUST.
They completely toasted the Battle Finder and matchmaking. It was hilariously bad. But they did make it better pretty quickly. And they seem to be listening. Down to Cmdr Wang getting touchy (not feely) with forum posters. Very funny. Not Pro though.
The new maps are interesting. A bit large, possibly. Maybe they are intended for 32v32 game play? 64v64?
The draw distance still makes the game junk to play on many occasions. Like large maps, hard to see what to shoot at when it disappears. I really think that if you bring your sight on from a different direction that you may or may not get target information is a fascinating bit of game design. Or it is just junk. Your choice.
The new facilities are great. Although they said the vehicles cannot camp the objective i wonder if they realize the effect of a 80GJ blaster pounding away through that long window in the new sockets? Mostly it works though.
The huge maps in Ambush? Seriously, I thought we established that too big was bad in Beta. Then we proved too small was bad in the Game Show back east. We had some nice balance. Now we have lost Free LAVs and got back huge maps.
Aim Assist changes the game drastically. For better or worse is tough to say right now. Definitely the game is different.
Active Scanners finally work! It is like a miracle. Or maybe it is a way to burn more SP because someone in the squad Has To Have Them. And with the reduction in information, you cannot even find your squad! What fun, chase after someone to realize they have full armor and the guy that didn't was running the other way! Man that is funny. Funny they would think it was fun.
But we have pretty, pretty grass that springs to life as your wondrous Merc ambles by. Called texture pop-in if you are being honest and is not considered a good piece of game design. Even if the grass grows as you get closer. Cute waste of GPU, but it is still texture pop-in. More important than FOV or Draw Distance Cut Off.
The game is better. There are fewer crashes. Fewer hard crashes (requires shutting off the PS3). Most games are less laggy. The laser rifle is useful again. Shotguns can hit something. Proto gear will drop like a rock if you get the slightest advantage on them. People are dancing with death a little more, moving to free suits again. The events make us grind more.
Now we will see if 1.5 helps or kills tanks. Who knows, nobody. Time is the real test down in the DUST. And you will spend time because you have to grind or fall behind.
If they keep the draw distance at the current value then I still won't recommend the game to friends. It looks like someone that doesn't understand what counts in a game took over after Chromosome. Maybe they did.
Definitely better than 1.3. |

DoomLead wrote:fair enough. you are entitled to an opinion with the exception of the laser rifle, heavy dropsuit, & tanks being insanely OP. Seriously 1.4 blows chromosome apart in so many ways -- snip -- Really? Not being able to see targets breaks the most fundamental aspect of shooting at a target in a first person shooter.
How is that better? It makes the game broken. Not better. It was because they wanted fancy graphics, didn't know how to do it correctly or in a proper balance, so they cut off draw distance and now the game is not nearly as good a shooter (aka FPS). Nothing else really matters if the basics of the game are fundamentally broken. Granted they have fixed many problems with Chromosome, while losing the some of the most interesting aspects of the game.
Your list of possible fixes for the various patches are interesting. Where did you find the others past 1.5? I wonder because you didn't include heavier graphics and shorter draw distance nor any attempt to balance their pandering to artists over game play. Big surprise, they never will prefer game play over Anything Else.
The 1.5 vehicle changes will totally rewrite HAVs. Fine. No SP Respec? I seriously doubt it will be offered on Day 1 of the release as it should be. It might, but I am not holding my breath. Changing Tanks for the better? Not in what I read, Doom. It will remove the function of the tank except in very particular (read as CCP/Shanghai approved) situations. And probably not worth playing as they still do not understand First Person Shooting. Invisible targets are far worse in tanks, BTW.
After 1.0 and 1.1 I simply do not, nor cannot trust CCP/Shanghai again. Maybe one day they will regain it. But, they would have to care and they have done nothing that indicates they do. The game is changing and they are going ahead with their vision regardless of what it costs the players, in time, SP and AUR.
You are entitled to your opinion as well. Maybe you Skilled into it.

DoomLead wrote:the draw distance is a good point for people who have the ability to snipe from insane distances(cough cough redline) I hit someone earlier from 800m with a covenant so anything farther than that is really outside of normal engagement range.
the draw distance was made to try to curb redline sniping and give dropships some type of abilty to escape swarm launchers.
you forgot about the improved physics that made driving LAVs easier which gave rise to the murder taxi I have no idea where you got those tidbits of misunderstanding from. Draw distance cut off was only based on graphics optimization. To support the improved (higher level of texture detail) the draw distance was reduced. It had to be. Otherwise the frame rate would have dropped dramatically.
It has nothing to do with sniping or drop ships. Yes, that might have been a side effect however, the reason was graphics load, pure and simple. They have apologized and said they want to get it back to what it was in Chromosome. So that makes your position ... optimistic at best.
I hit someone with a Farsight Sniper Rifle in Chromosome at 1350m. ~800m is not a big deal, and I could see them. All you got to aim at was the point on the bottom of the chevron. That is not skill. That is luck. In a mediocre game design with an abysmal draw distance. Don't start on the Red Line Sniping. Watch Sniper '93 and ask a real sniper how close they want to be. It will look like a Red Line Sniper.
Regarding Murder Taxis, how long have you been playing? Because Murder Taxis have been part of the game, an unwelcome part, since Closed Beta. The big change recently that made some bad drivers better at it was providing reasonable controls for the LAVs versus the idiot ones they gave us before. Like from a video arcade twenty years ago. The new physics provided the wonderful flips and rolls. Finally, a bump over a 4" curb didn't launch the vehicle meters into the air. That never made sense and was obviously broken from the beginning.
The latest (1.4) is the reduction of damage through a modified physics model (no indication if it is real physics, New Eden physics, standard video game physics or just tweak it until the forums quit QQ about Murder Taxi physics). The result being it is not as easy to just drive through a group of enemies and kill them all. At full speed and one Red in the open, yes. That works.
Go on believing your fantasy. This is a Science Fiction Video Game and you fit right in. However, in real video game development it is not standard to break the game every month or less. Nor is it good software development practice to release developer test objects to the players. Both of those have happened in DUST. That the game is as good as it is surprises me. Yes, it is becoming a better game. However. It will never be as good as Chromosome.
CCP/Shanghai doesn't want it to. SP has to cost more. AUR needs to be purchased. Grinding is a way of life in F2P.
And Draw Distance being at ridiculous levels is great. Because now we have to buy Scanners! That finally work after a year of promises. The fact that they work and the draw distances were reduced while all the information related to your own freaking squad was eliminated couldn't possibly be connected. TacNet is a lie, always was.
And 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and on will only make it better. Right.
I had to restart DUST today because it locked up on the Victory screen. Which it never did to me Before 1.4.
I will be happy when they quit breaking it. |
