I was rereading the aim overhaul dev blog from back in July (Found here) and I noticed one little tidbit that stood out. People were apparently claiming that they were having a hard time staying on target and so they re-enabled aim assist, and as such "The improvement in accuracy is significant."
Now, I've been playing FPS games since the early days of Quake and Doom, all the way through the Battlefields, Halos, Call of Duty, etc. Not once has aiming been something that was considered a problem in these games because, as each game was different, you got used to it and eventually started doing great once you learn the ins and outs of the weapons. Never in those games did I have to depend on aim assists to stay on target because that sort of ruins the point of a shooter. At most, aim assist was a friction mechanism that reduced input near a target allowing for better fine aiming. The point is, the game still forced you to give input in order to succeed, and that input depended on whether you got a kill or not. Never did the reticle simply "stick" to the target while I simply held the trigger. The reason for this is that in a competitive setting, you can't be depending on the game to do your aiming as it completely disregards player ability.
On to the point, if people were supposedly having such difficulty, why is it that the first thing we resort to is giving everyone adhesion and magnetism for their reticle? I personally never heard any squabbling about aiming amongst my peers. The fact that you guys claimed to turn assists back on and suddenly "The improvement in accuracy is significant" really shows that the game and it's aim assists is what is providing that accuracy, not the player. This patch has steadily worked out the kinks but the fact is aim assist is quickly killing this game for me. I'm baffled by the fact that all of a sudden everyone has great aim when it should in fact be a normal curve of skilled vs non skilled players. Please, for the love of God tune down how strong the adhesion and magnetism is. The game is turning into a "lock and fire" type play. Agility, acrobatics, player movement have all been shot down and it's now just a battle of stats: who has more DPS, who has more health, and who got the first shot. |

Back in patch 1.05 for BF3, DICE buffed aim assist because they couldn't fix aiming on console. So to be fair, it isn't just CCP who can't figure out how to do aiming, most developers can't. Aim assist is like a band-aid on an infected wound. Instead of fixing the problem (hit detection), they cover it up with aim assist.
Video here demonstrating how ridiculous aim assist is in battlefield. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQxiECgBWAA |

People are exaggerating, the aiming was improved in lieu you can tell, aim assist isnt needed, but it is used to reduce the inaccuracies of you know not holding the weapon!
There is no problem with it here, just a load of bitter vets complaining because hit detection turned their faviroute weapon against them. TTK needs about 20% less, nothing more!! |
