CCP, I wanted to take a moment and give you some impressions of 1.4 and to see if others are feeling the same way. Firstly, the changes you made overall are AWESOME. The visual changes to the landscape/lighting/weapon fire make the game feel so much...more. I think everyone will agree, however, that the launch of 1.4 has been a disaster, but happily you guys are working your hardest to get the issues resolved in a timely manner.
From your fixes yesterday, matchmaking was lightning quick; we only needed literally a few seconds to have a match made up and deploying. Now, the bug with some squad deploying and some being left behind is utterly annoying, as people have to log out/in to "fix" it, and even that doesn't work. We tried 6 times before we were able to get a whole squad in. So, please get this fixed!! I know you guys are working on fixes for 1.4, which is expected
Next, matches feel so much more dynamic with the squad view/scanning changes. It's epic to watch the enemies "light up" on the map. It's awesome getting a scan in before an orbital or figuring out if someone is "right there" to kill you or if you can safely sprint in the open. Epic changes here. I'll admit I was skeptical that shared vision would improve the game as much as it did, but my corpmates and I agree that it made big changes to the game FOR THE BETTER.
BUT--you guys must bring back the ability for Logi to see who to repair. It's just not practical for a logi who is supposed to be triaging to have to pan and scan around to see hp targets. Don't get me wrong, the screen has MUCH less visual clutter, and it's something I thought I wouldn't notice, but from a target selection/firing point of view, it's much easier to do that. Combined with the controversial aiming changes and I think it's a win overall. But, you guys have to give Logi the ability to see friendlies at least when we have our repair tools out. Just limit it to friendlies within the repper's range.
So, overall I'd say great job, and I'm interested to see how others feel. However, please learn from this experience and have 1.5+ go much more smoothly. Honestly, 1.4's launch has been a disaster, but I'm confident that you guys will adapt. You always have, and its grown a plucky little space sim MMO to be one of the best space games around. Just do the same with this FPS.
How does everyone else feel about it, aside from the forum flamers? |

See, I think the scanners make the match much more dynamic, and I really like that. It's REALLY nice, too, to have options for equipment. There are several compelling choices, from hives, needles, uplinks, scanners, etc. I'd much rather have too many good choices than a just a few. I'm not sure if the scanners are working as intended, since you can do a 360 and get the whole area scanned with 100% accuracy, but they're great, great, great additions to the battlefield. The "pings" on the map provide so much intel, and it makes the game more tactical, since we can scan down flanking positions to get a better idea of our situation.
And the decrease in visual clutter from so many target brackets makes the visuals of the game stand out more, and the new maps (gorgeous!) and the pla. Other than the problems created for Logistics, the changes in this regard to 1.4 were exceptional.

Match making was the only thing I wanted out of this patch, so 1.4 is a complete failure. I'm calling bs. You are the only person who has said this, if you're being pubstomped then you just suck. If you're losing against corps. Then it's probably because their teamwork is better than yours. Matchmaking was never meant to seperate corp from non-corp, or even skilled from non-skilled players. It's supposed to separate players with superior equipment from players with inferior equipment. And to call on YOUR bs, I read a post from a Eve online vet who started playing a week ago and he said even after 1.4 he was still getting majorly pub stomped and found that it made the new player experience "soul destroying" I will agree with this, although my sample size was limited, so it could have just been a fluke. However, I played an alt character on my main account through the academy, and the first match I played I was up against fully proto equipped squads from Pure Innocence. Granted, I just played the one match, but I recall thinking "oh wow. This is balanced. First match, 500k sp vs proto death squad." If I'm honest, I'm sure it is a bug with how the matchmaking system generates data for matchmaking purposes. It surely must be fixed, since it directly hurts new players.
But generally speaking, I have found matches much more balanced and overall more fun as a result. On my main character, I've found that our squad was matched up against similarly-skilled players most, if not all of the time (barring Tuesday's disastrous 4 v 10, 2 v 6, etc. matches). Rarely are we getting dominated or redlined, and rarely are we dominating or redlining the enemy. This means to me, at least, that something is obviously working in the background to make sure matches make more sense. |
