I started playing Dust a week ago, I'm an EVE player of 8 years. My first week of being a mercenary was full of emptying entire magazines of ammunition in to an enemy barely damaging their shields then have them turn around and kill me in one shot.
Having played EVE for 8 years I wasn't prepared to give up that easily, so I stuck around and 1.4 was very welcome. Despite the very wonky match making, I was actually able to kill people and could stay alive longer than 20 seconds at a time.
I log in today and the match making seems fixed, but now I'm back to square one. I'm not about to give up, but constantly being one shot and being unable to kill anyone is pretty soul destroying. |

Its the reason why they need (a working) match making so badly. I find it interesting that an Eve Online vet found it soul destroying because some of the proto-bear pubstomping loving vets commonly tell the new players to suck it up because Eve online is an unforgiving game so DUST should be too. Clearly they've been misrepresenting Eve Online.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for CCP to smother new players with bubble wrap and give them guns that fire rainbows & unicorns.
From the day I joined EVE Online I was immersed in this open world that enabled me to socialize with those around me, as a result I teamed up from the get go and I've had some great experiences within EVE Online, but I learned very early on that working as part of a team was crucial.
I completely agree that the harshness of EVE Online is a critical aspect of the experiences that I have had, but from the moment I was launched out in to the Chaven system in 2005, I was offered a fair chance. If I went out with my corp and I was popped, I would re access where I went wrong, change my fittings or try a different role in the team. From day one I was useful and I had fun. Dust is another matter. While I think it needs to reflect the harsh reality of New Eden, it needs to do so while remaining fun, and dying time after time with little reward is just not cricket.
I, at least could use my previous experience which led me to IVY League, but for those who have never played EVE or Dust before, I couldn't imagine how hard it must be to try and meet people to team up with, which would at least give them a slight chance. |
