Before I put up the story, a few things. I'm putting this up because in order for me to progress I think I might need to have the others read so I don't keep going over what I've already written. I still don't think I'm completely happy with how some of the chapters are coming out, but so be it. Also, it's lacking the one thing I would love to add which is proper locations but since I'm not on EVE, at least not yet, I can't really do that. Hopefully when I do get on I'll be able to come back and redo this appropriately.
Story starts in second post with the short story Euryale that is in my short stories as the prologue. Enjoy. |

Prologue
Doctor Kira had a few dangerous patients to be sure, ex-soldiers with post traumatic stress, lone merenaries who had not started out so lonely, ex-commanders with horrible guilt about lost soldiers, the list went on. Still she was a civilian psychologist so anyone could come to her and now she learned that her newest patient was one of the clone soldiers people talked so much about. She looked nothing like what she had expected a clone soldier to be, nor what people said they looked like; all white clones with what was essentially a generic face. No, the lady that sat before her was a brunette, hair done in a tight bun, and stern eyes that were definitely telling the truth. Her movements were graceful, but not the kind mothers taught their daughters. These movements were efficient and never without purpose; a brush of the hand to remove stray hair from her face, a swat to swiftly eliminate some pesky insect that had invaded the privacy of the room.
Suddenly Doctor Kira was aware of the fact that she was afraid. No, not afraid. Terrified. She was sitting in the same room as one of the people who in recent news were made out to be monstrous killing machines with the sole purpose of killing for profit.
Kira swallowed, nervously. The clone soldier stood stock still in her chair, watching her, legs crossed with hands on her knees. She was unsure of how to proceed. She had met with many soldiers, but this was different and her eyes. Behind her stern eyes was something strange, unlike anything she had ever seen.
GÇ£So you're immortal?GÇ¥
GÇ£If you can call it that.GÇ¥
GÇ£But... you don't die.GÇ¥
GÇ£Oh I die... a lot. Over two thousand deaths I can remember, each in vivid detail. Keeps me up at night now.GÇ¥
GÇ£Wouldn't you be used to it by now?GÇ¥ Kira swallowed again, not believing she had asked a question like that so simply.
GÇ£Do I make you nervous?GÇ¥ The clone sloldier inquired locking eyes with Kira.
Kira would have sworn her heart stopped, maybe even turned to stone, under the woman's gaze were it not for the breath that caught in her throat. GÇ£Very.GÇ¥
The woman smiled, more like a twitch of the mouth for a face no longer used to making the expression. GÇ£To answer your question, I guess I should be. I know some who are and others who are having the same problems I am. It's one thing for a regular soldier to be afraid of dying, another to die multiple times over only to be reborn again. A cycle of life and death that repeats itself endlessly like a crazy toy repeating the same words no matter how many times you press the button.GÇ¥
Kira tried her best to calm down despite the fact that she somehow was incapable of feeling her heart. She stood almost stock still in the chair as she spoke to the woman. GÇ£And how does it affect you now?GÇ¥
GÇ£I suppose it could be called traumatic stress, except it's endless trauma. Sure I live, sure I kill others. Sometimes I go entire missions hours long and never die, but then there's every other time that's not then, when I die, whether I get blown apart, my throat cut, my head blown off, pinned between a speeding vehicle and a two foot thick steel door. The ways have been endless. It haunts my dreams now. The only time it doesn't haunt me is in the moment itself it seems, where all that matters is the mission, my targets, objectives.GÇ¥
GÇ£And what do you fight for?GÇ¥
GÇ£What do you mean?GÇ¥
Kira swallowed and licked her lips. Her throat was dry now. GÇ£What drives you to fight? What makes you go into combat? What made you decide to become what you are now?GÇ¥
GÇ£At first it was the promise of immortality for me. Then the vast amounts of ISK to be made. Now? I don't know. For me the ISK isn't enough, all it does is serve to get me more gear to fight with. It's not enough.GÇ¥
GÇ£Looks like you need a reason to fight. Even a reason to dream. Something you find that you're willing to...GÇ¥ Kira cut off her statement before she finished it, but the woman finished it for her.
GÇ£... Put my life on the line for?GÇ¥
GÇ£In a manner of speaking. Something that for you would make all the pain and deaths worth it.GÇ¥
GÇ£And where do you suppose I look for this purpose?GÇ¥
GÇ£That is something I can't tell you honestly. It's up to you what purpose you seek and where you find it. No matter what it is, when you find it, you'll know, because the deaths will stop mattering to you.GÇ¥
The woman seemed to be thinking, but her eyes remained on Kira, calculating. GÇ£I suppose you're right,GÇ¥ she said finally after a few moments of silence.
The alarm went off, indicating the end of their session. GÇ£That indicates the end of our session,GÇ¥ stated Kira, nowhere near confidently enough.
GÇ£Thank you,GÇ¥ the woman said rising, finally taking her eyes off of Kira. Kira felt her heart once again and the will to move returned to her. GÇ£I guess I'll have to search for my purpose then.GÇ¥
GÇ£I wish you luck in finding it.GÇ¥
GÇ£Thank you. I'll transfer the ISK for the session to your account.GÇ¥
Kira nodded. As the woman reached the door she stopped her with one final statement. GÇ£You never told me your name.GÇ¥
GÇ£It's Euryale.GÇ¥ |

Chapter 1
It had been nearly a week since Euryale stepped into Kira's office. Kira had replayed the session, both in her mind and the recording, multiple times since then. It was only after the session, when the fear had subsided, that Kira realised that the clone mercenary had left her with many questions. Questions that Kira had begun to seek out the answers to on her own. Finding material on the subject of the clone soldiers had not proven difficult. There were news articles everywhere on them. One involved the Amarrians and a manhunt regarding clone soldiers with what were referred to as Generation I implants. Another article was about a challenge issued by the pirates known as Mordu's Legion. One praised the efficiency of the clone mercenaries. She began to grow afraid when she found a forum discussing the clone mercenaries.
The discovery of that forum had given her a very overwhelming sense of paranoia, like someone had been tracking her in some form since then. It drove her to take Nerve Sticks during the day and a Sooth Sayer last night as she kept going back to the forum to read more and more information about the clone mercenaries, some of which seemed like firsthand information. A lot of the time it left her with more questions than answers.
Now Kira found herself sitting in a club having drinks. The strobe lights were headache inducing, but then, so were the drinks and the music that shook the very chair she sat in. The dance floor was packed, lights flashing and washing over them. People filled the upper balconies, either sitting at tables, dancing, or leaning on the railings. In all cases drinks were in their hands. If she listened closely she could hear lewd sounds coming from the walls where more intimate types of parties were taking place. She flushed occasionally at the sound.
Across from her sat Serena and Serenity, twins she met while studying. They had recently gotten back from a trip and at their insistence dragged Kira off to the club. Serenity chatted happily about the things they had seen when they had been travelling, turning to her sister only where minor details were concerned. Kira was content to listen to Serenity shout her story over the pulse of the music.
GÇ£So you do anything lately, Oriki?GÇ¥
GÇ£Not really,GÇ¥ Kira answered, smiling at the name. It brought back an interesting memory; one that made her flush and chuckle at the same time. GÇ£Had an interesting patient recently.GÇ¥
GÇ£Who is he?GÇ¥ Serenity inquired giddily.
GÇ£What? No, nothing like that... Just... A tough patient.GÇ¥ She sighed and took another sip of her drink.
Serenity looked at Serena who was scrutinising their friend. GÇ£You look like you need something to take the edge off,GÇ¥ Serena smiled, pulling out a small bag. In it were some small white tablets, with and X crossed into them.
Kira smiled, it had been a while. GÇ£You have no idea,GÇ¥ she said, taking two and swallowing them, following them up with the last swallow of her drink.
Serenity was the first to go, the ever air-headed woman slwoly getting a broad grin on her face as the X-Instinct flooded her system. Serenity started analytically rambling off inappropriate things about the occurences taking place behind the walls. She kept counting in a sing-song voice and then cursing when she lost track, starting over again.
GÇ£Counting voices,GÇ¥ was the answer Serenity gave when Kira inquired what she was doing.
Kira could not tell if she or Serena went next, but at that point she did not really care as she started watching the movements of everyone around her. She looked over the railing next to her, watching the bodies move in a sea of bliss, each person their own, yet part of the same group. She sat watching the way everyone moved as they danced and walked. |

Chapter 1 Part 2
Sometime after she decided to take another pill she noticed an out of place glint of light as someone walked past them on the balcony. Kira turned in a manner that she thought was quick but was more of a lazy lean to see the person who walked past. She saw the glean of metal on the back of a man's neck.
GÇ£Capsuleer,GÇ¥ she mouthed, fascinated. She had never actually seen one in person, though she had often seen the ships they flew whenever she went to a station.
She watched the way the capsuleer moved, and was reminded of the way Euryale moved. There was no waste of energy as the capsuleer moved, but it was a bit more aggressive as though he had a very specific mission. He disappeared into a crowd of dancers at the end of the balcony, causing Kira to pout slightly at losing the opportunity to observe him.
As the night wore on, Serenity started rambling about things she noticed about people as they walked past. Serena shared in Kira's silent observation of the room. Kira took the risk of taking another pill, which was when things started getting weird for her. The room started moving and she began to see shadows where there should not be shadows. A woman walked past them with a tight bun, causing her to look around, the word GÇ£EuryaleGÇ¥ passing her lips. She rubbed her eyes, only to see the woman's bun turn into a flow of hair.
Her paranoia took over a bit as she thought about the woman. She looked around, looking for anyone who was watching her. The shadows started moving, reaching out to grab at her. They wanted to take her away, question her about why she was looking for information about the clone soldiers. She knew little, if she knew anything at all.
It was not enough for the shadows holding onto her.
GÇ£What does she know?GÇ¥
GÇ£What do you know?GÇ¥
GÇ£I don't know.GÇ¥
GÇ£What do you know!?GÇ¥
GÇ£What do I know!? I don't know anything!GÇ¥
GÇ£You know something! Why have you been searching!?GÇ¥
GÇ£I don't know!GÇ¥
The shadow grabbed for her.
Kira shot awake screaming, covered in sweat and kicking her sheet off of her. She looked around motioning to bring on all the lights in the apartment. She wore her clothes from the night out. Her shoes were at the foot of the bed where she had kicked them off. She made for the shower, struggling to get out of the stifling club clothes.
The cold water washed over her, soothing her while bringing her back to reality. She pinched her nose bridge and slid down the bathroom wall. She released the breath she was holding. One patient she may never see again was becoming a bit more stressful than Kira was beginning to think she could handle. |

Chapter 2
Kira awoke in her bed, her towel draped lazily over body. Light filtered through the blinds. She made a motion to shut them, plunging the room into near darkness save for the greenish glow that began eminating from the lights going embedded in the wall going around the room. It made the room just bright enough to see. She rolled out of the bed pulling on a tank top and a short pants and wandered into the kitchen.
She had long grown unaccustomed to the nightlife and now it showed. Yet, last night tempted her a bit, save for the nightmares brought on by her stress and the X-Instinct. She sighed, taking a seat, pondering her day. There were no appointments today and she pondered just taking a break for a week. It would give her time to clear her head.
Aimlessly, as she pondered a short holiday, she began to surf GalNet, looking for things she could do without leaving the planet. Shopping was, of course, the first thing on the list and she while she could just order, she figured going out for herself would probably be healthier. There was a fashion show coming up soon that she could attend, and some new movies to watch.
It was maybe an hour she spent looking at things as the mood hit her. The newest vids showing CONCORD busting drug runners, the latest styles in clothing, a few other explicit products. Eventually she found herself pondering Euryale and the questions she had brought up in Kira's mind again and without even realising it she once again found herself on the forum that discussed the mercenaries.
GÇ£The Empires are lying,GÇ¥ was the topic for one of them. The first post was, at the very least, interesting. GÇ£Capsuleer corporations in New Eden use these clone soldiers, this much we know. Some of these clone soldiers even have their own corporations. We know this as well. The Empires continue to tell us this. What is not said is the fact that these Empires actively enlist and use these clone mercenaries as well.GÇ¥
The next post followed. GÇ£We already know this about the Ammar. Jamyl did order the manhunt.GÇ¥ The thread eventually devolved into bickering about whether or not this was true. Some people presented easy facts for both sides, while others claimed they were forged statistics.
Another thread described in some detail, military operations taking place in the region known as Molden Heath regarding these clone mercenaries and their corporations. Kira wondered if there was a chance that some of these people describing these military actions were in fact mercenaries themselves. She looked up the region of Molden Heath, to discover that some of the areas in it were in fact high security, meaning there could be others in the areas who were simply observers.
A particularly interesting topic caught her attention as she continued to scroll and read. GÇ£Has anyone met a clone mercenary?GÇ¥ Kira's hand shook slightly as she opened the thread, reading through the responses. Some persons claimed they had met a clone mercenary at some point. Some asked what they were like while others tried their best to debunk some claims causing a few to eventually admit to lying about it. Kira pondered if she should respond.
After a lot of consideration, she eventually found herself making a profile, an easy task given the anonymity of the forum, and posting on the thread. GÇ£I've met a clone mercenary,GÇ¥ she said simply. Most responded to her, calling her a liar. Others wanted to know what the clone mercenary was like. Kira found herself put off by the crass narrow mindedness of most who responded to her post.
She closed GalNet and got dressed. She was going shopping.
A few hours later, with a variety of bags, she stumbled into her apartment, sweaty and panting from the day's shopping. She felt relieved. Half of the clothes she bought, she probably would not get around to wearing for a while, but at least she was happier now. She put the bags in her bedroom and sat on the bed, kicking off her shoes and pulling off her jacket, throwing it carelessly onto the bed. Stretch the day's walking out of her, she walked to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of wine.
Absently she pulled up the thread on GalNet and took a look at it, knowing she would care little for whatever responses she may have gotten. The last post in the thread was in response to her post.
GÇ£I believe you.GÇ¥ - ObscureLight.
A notification popped up on Kira's Neocom. For a moment she felt her heart stop. It was an invitation to a chat channel she had never heard of.
She accepted the invitation hesitantly. There was only one other person in the channel. Their avatar was simply a shilhouette. The person's name in the channel made her heart stop. ObscureLight. |

Chapter 3
The fork pierced the steak at a corner. Juices oozed slowly out of the holes created by the fork onto the white plate, as the knife, wielded by the right hand, cut slowly and methodically into it. The knife retreated, its job completed as the fork lifted the piece of steak from the plate. The fork placed the meat between parted lips, painted with dark lipstick, and retreated, leaving the steak behind. The mouth chewed slowly, meticulously, as the mind analysed the succulent meat. The marination in spiced wine gave the steak a sweet flavour that brought the vestiges of a smile to the lips.
Euryale continued to eat, slowly, enjoying every piece of her steak from the balcony overlooking the the city. Below was a small park. From her perch, Euryale could see people walking along the park's pathways. It took a bit of effort, but she managed to ring herself to enjoy the sight rather than, have her eyes darting constantly around, searching for an adversary who was not there. She noted a woman walking along a path, with a child in tow. Vaguely she found herself pondering if she would ever...
It had been a little difficult at first, but since her meeting with the psychologist, she had managed to bring herself to enjoy some finer things; things she had long since abandoned in favour of the adrenaline rush of the battlefield. The fruits of her endeavours lay scattered in shopping bags around the room. Clothes, she would probably not wear for months or even longer, lined her closet and a variety of wines were lined neatly on the kitchen counter. She had ordered several varied meals over the course of the last few days and found herself to be enjoying them immensely. She smiled. She figured it was a step in the right direction.
She considered going for a drive today, renting some high end vehicle to take for a leisurely cruise around the city. It would be nice to drive without having to worry about dodging magnetically accelerated projectiles and making sharp turns in order to avoid dropships and swarms of missiles.
About halfway through her meal, her NeoCom notified her of a message. It was from Caine, her second in command. GÇ£Need you for an assignment.GÇ¥
Euryale sighed and responded. GÇ£Time?GÇ¥
Caine's response was almost instantaneous. GÇ£Tonight. I'm almost at your door.GÇ¥
She put down the knife and fork and walked to the door. When she opened it, she saw Caine walking straight for her room from the other end of the hall. She returned to her seat on the balcony, leaving the door open.
Caine was a brute of a man in both mind and spirit, and his choice of clone ensured that it was body as well. He ducked through the door, and stepped through the living room. His eyes darted around to see the results of his squad leader's shopping.
GÇ£Never took you for much of a shopper,GÇ¥ Caine stated, taking a seat at the table on the balcony.
GÇ£What's the assignment?GÇ¥ she asked, ignoring Caine's statement.
GÇ£Never any small talk.GÇ¥ Caine leaned onto the table and began laying out the assignment. GÇ£We recently intercepted communications regarding research a capsuleer's company is performing. We're not completely sure what it's about but obtaining it could prove lucrative.GÇ¥
GÇ£Wait,GÇ¥ Euryale said, stopping Caine. GÇ£We don't know what it is, yet we want it? What does Arcade know?GÇ¥
GÇ£That's the thing. We don't know what it is, but we know a lot of people are looking into it.GÇ¥
GÇ£How do we know that?GÇ¥
GÇ£Some spies we have around said that some other corporations also intercepted the communications and seem to be looking to make a move. Even the Empires seem a little jumpy about it.GÇ¥
GÇ£Something's wrong. If a single communication could spark the mobilization of so many factions, why wouldn't it be encrypted well enough to protect it. There's no way it's an error. What did the message contain?GÇ¥
GÇ£The data was in fragments but it's hinting at unlocking something to deal with Sleeper tech.GÇ¥
Euryale raised an eyebrow. GÇ£I can see why so many would want it, but that doesn't explain why so many people would be able to just get ahold of the communications.GÇ¥
The look on Caine's face showed that he now shared his Commander's concern. He looked at her but remained silent.
GÇ£I don't think it's a trap, but this could prove problematic, and I don't think Arcade wants to deal with this directly. He wouldn't have called us if he wanted direct, so what else is there?GÇ¥
GÇ£Well, there's a project manager in the city right now; a civilian. We're going to intercept and interrogate him tonight.GÇ¥
GÇ£Can you get me a toolkit?GÇ¥
GÇ£Already done.GÇ¥
GÇ£Who is intercepting him?GÇ¥
GÇ£Colt and Xadriel.GÇ¥
GÇ£Contact me with the address when you get him.GÇ¥ Euryale took a sip of her wine, indicating the end of their conversation.
Caine stood up. GÇ£See you in a few hours Commander.GÇ¥
Euryale nodded her head in acknowledgement as he left, returning to silent contemplation. She sipped the wine in silence, continuing to watch the park. Minutes later she stood and walked downstairs to the hotel's lobby, where she promptly paid to rent a high end hovercar. Work called, but at least she would do this for herself before she had to work. |

Chapter 4
Euryale pulled the luxury vehicle into a parking structure near to a popular club and made her way outside. She was near the ocean. She could hear it lapping against the concrete from inside the parking garage. As she stepped outside, some of the city's nightlife greeted her. Lights flashed all around, with clubs casinos and brothels lining the shore street. She avoided these places on her way to the location given to her by Caine. Her eyes, ever aware, glanced through dark alleys where shadows and silhouettes took part in dark deals and carnal pleasures. Still, she never found reason to tense, though she placed her hands behind her back occasionally, hand brushing on the hilt of the hidden Allotek Combat Knife sheathed horizontally on the small of her back under her jacket.
She arrived, without incident, to a nondescript storage facility, one of many, bordering the water. She knocked on the side door. It opened to reveal Caine, standing waiting for her. He wore a large jacket that, on any average person, may have consumed them. She stepped inside.
Them room was small, essentially a small office where people could check on inventory. The room led to catwalks around the inside of the storage warehouse. They stepped out onto one. All around them were crates upon crates stacked neatly and creating pathways and tunnels. They walked down to the lower floor. They walked through several tunnels created by the crates of varying lengths and widths to a large crate at the bottom; One of their safehouse locations. The crate was large, capable of only moving via skycrane, but it never had any reason to be moved. Euryale waited as Caine banged on the container door which promptly opened from the inside.
The inside of the container was a room onto itself, with a ceiling high enough for Caine to stand comfortable in, and lights lining the walls, which were three metres in either direction from the door. The walls were lined with a variety of tools and implements, some medical, some technical, some electronic and some designed with, to the uninformed, obscure purposes. The only thing out of place in the container was the man seated in a metal chair in the centre with a bright light over his head. His head was slumped to his chest as he slept peacefully strapped to the chair.
Colt and Xadriel gave quick but sharp salutes as Caine and Euryale stepped into the container. Colt's civilian clone was lean, wearing brown and black, with a tight fitting shirt. He wore worker boots with his pants neatly tucked into them. Xadriel was a Matari, the only non-Gallentean in the container, excluding the Caldari strapped to the chair. He looked a little more unkempt. His locks hung loosely over his face and his green jacket with its infinite pockets seemed to pull in every direction under the weight of whatever he kept in his pockets.
GÇ£At ease,GÇ¥ Euryale said. Colt and Xadriel quickly relaxed.
She motioned for Caine to close the doors as she removed her jacket and placed it along with knife on one of the tables along the right wall. She circled her subject for a moment looking him over. He wore business attire, a simple suit, definitely not the most expensive she had ever seen. His hair was short and a quick scan indicated a few cybernetics but nothing as advanced to indicate any link to another clone in any form.
GÇ£Wake him up,GÇ¥ she told Colt as she turned down the lights on the walls. Colt walked over to the medical supplies and drained something into a syringe. After checking it for air, he inserted the needle into the man's arm and pushed the plunger. After a few seconds the man groggily awoke. He quickly became aware of the situation, cursing loudly into the darkness from within the bright white light above his head.
Euryale's fist came out of the darkness, hitting him square in the jaw. He shook away the shock of the blow looking around wildly and cursing into the darkness. Euryale pushed into the light to look the man in the face. Her cold eyes caused him to stop immediately. |

So I've decided to try making Euryale into a full project so it may actually turn out pretty long. Also not sure how confident I am about chapter 4 as I'm trying to make sure the darker elements of the story come out. I'm not entirely sure whether or not I succeeded. |
