Hi All-
Just want to write down a few notes about what we changed in 1.4 in relation to joining a battle and explain some of the questions you might have. So in 1.4 alongside a new battle finder we have rewritten the matchmaking system, that is the logic that decides what battle you join and who you are playing with. There are a number of things that we are trying to optimize in this step, for example:
- Find you your preferred selection of game mode
- Reduce the network latency between you and the server
- Match you against similarly skilled players
- Reduce the waiting time it takes to find a battle
- Reduce the number of partially filled battles
- Reduce how often you join a battle already in progress
And now on with some questions:
Why don't I get the game mode I selected? You can now choose multiple game modes however this will not always gaurentee you get one of those modes. The selection is used in 2 ways, we first build groups of players who have similar preferences of game mode, region and ranking. The second step is to use everyone's preferences to perform a vote on which mode to play. We will be tuning how effectively this works over the coming days so you should see some improvement in how often you get your selected modes.
The teams are not balanced / full This is a known issue, we are working on a fix right now.
Matchmaking is taking too long? / Why do I get some message about a guy called Scotty? This is a big new system with a lot of parameters that need careful tweaking. We are aware of a couple of issues already and are working on fixing them in the coming days. We will also be carefully monitoring the health of the matchmaking queues including waiting times and how balanced the battles are, then adjusting settings accordingly. For now, if you get a Scotty message just click join again.
I have a developer blog in the works covering a lot of these changes in more detail which we will post once things have stabilized and we have some time to produce pretty graphs and such. If you have any questions or feedback please reply to this thread.
Thanks for your patience and I hope you enjoy the rest of Uprising 1.4. |

So our matchmaking went a bit rogue today and did basically none of the things I said it would. We have taken Scotty out the back for a good talking too and he's ready to start the day fresh and get the job done as of downtime Wednesday.
As a quick FYI because I've seen a few comments like "why don't you test this beforehand?". Obviously matchmaking is pretty tricky to test without the huge numbers of players, so we have a system of robots that simulate thousand of players connecting and joining battles. Unfortunately it looks like there was something wrong with our test simulation because it did not perform the same today on TQ as it did during testing.
The good news is we now have a heap of detailed logs to try to replicate what we saw today to help us run more accurate tests in the future.
Thanks for all the helpful comments and feedback today. |

Temba Fusrodah wrote:Tried the Matchmaking again today .... tossed first into an in progress game but it was at least the type of game I wanted. Next I got multiple Scotty messages, and then finally a match, ugh! not the kind I wanted. This process continued with me being put into the type match I prefer only about one in seven attempts. So I gave up public contracts and switched to FW. For the record I really like the option to select the faction I will accept contracts from, good job! Faction warfare matches went well, I am enjoying the new buildings and maps. Additionally my daughter who is fresh out of the rookie academy was able to deploy with our squad in FW but not in public contracts. Second day was not quite so horrible as the first, however I would hate to think I am isolated to FW to consistently get the matches I want and a squad of my own choosing.
I will have a look into this, it should not be possible to be joining the incorrect game modes. Can you maybe try toggling all of your options off, close the options window, reopen the window and pick them again? See if that puts you in the right battle type.
Also when you were playing public contracts were you in a squad? If so, were you the squad leader or following a different squad leader into battle? |

war Dialer wrote:I'm not sure if you all are playing the same game. Currently matchmaking is STILL broken. Squads do not all get put into the same match, games are starting with clone reserves depleted, and we LOST content with this release.
CCP - Please revert changes. Accept that this deployment was not properly tested.
We have people tracking down the issue with the whole squad not getting into battle, that's actually a separate problem from the matchmaking going haywire but we will get it fixed asap. We also have on our todo list to prevent you from joining battles which are about to finish, part of that work was completed this release but its not full hooked up yet so we will do that hopefully in the next.
Thanks for the feedback. |

George Moros wrote:After my yesterday's post that was full of praise for the battle finder fix, I now have to start whining. I don't know what (if anything) you changed today with battle finder, but I got some very annoying crap to report.
The "searching for battle" phase now takes much longer than yesterday (on average). I had some fights where I waited longer than a minute to start the "waiting for deployment" phase. But the most annoying part is matchmaking itself. In one fight, It was 2 on one side and seven on the other (guess which side I was in), and it stayed that way for the entire match. The other fight, it was 7 of us against literally NOONE. Again, for the entire match! I mean, c'mon!
This is a side effect of the other bug we are tracking down which is people having trouble joining the battle and which then creates an imbalance. I'm hoping to have a fix deployed for this early next week.
Depending on your region, game mode selection and squad size though you should expect it could take anywhere up to 3 minutes to find a match. We're obviously trying to optimize this so that it is as quick as possible but sometimes you just have to wait because there is no one ready to play against at the time. |

castba wrote:Whilst I have not played today, the matches I was in yesterday were all reasonably close. Much more enjoyable.
Only issue is that Scotty has an issue when first selecting a FW battle, but I just select it again and we ate deploying within 10 seconds with 12-16 on each side for most games (Australian playing in Euro server-have not tried the US, Asia or oceanic servers yet)
Overall very happy with what has been done Nullabor. Thank you.
I submitted another fix specifically for Scotty message in faction warfare today. It will be deployed on Monday, hopefully that fixes up what you were seeing today. |
