So the system currently in place allows corporations to own districts and profit from them (put simply). However, it's the dust side of corporations that are exclusively profiting from this. Outside of faction warfare, i hardly see how dust is affecting the eve universe. Now, i'm not advocating for the capsuleers or anything, but i thought these games were supposed to be linked.
When I first heard about Dust514, the concept was that land would be owned by capsuleers and their corporations and that conflicting corporations would have to HIRE mercenaries to defend/assault their districts. As the system currently stands, we act less like mercenaries and more like security forces. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKtYqWBR7h0 that trailer talks more about how dust was intended instead of what it has become.
I bring this topic up because of some of the recent drama i've seen within the community. Certain corporations and alliances have become so strong that it's preventing other corps from being able to do much. with that said, no i'm not whining about them. They are doing exactly what the game is designed to allow them to do. Eve corporations don't succeed because they are nice, it's because they are cut throat and methodical. Dust mercenaries should be even more so.
The point is made because, while these corporations do own a lot, they win because of their skill. As someone, perceptually, who is in need of mercenaries, it seems that i would only hire the best. Eve corporations that own the districts and profit from the planetary resources proved have a need of mercenaries. If the Eve corporations want to keep their districts, they need to shell out some heavy ISK to buy the best mercs. Dust corps on the other hand need to do their best to prove they are worth their money. That is how the mercenary world works and how Dust should also operate. The fact that we even have the option to own districts makes us Security Forces, not mercenaries.
TLDR; we are mercs not guards, we don't need planetary infrastructure give it to capsuleers.

No, I don't like being second banana. I have the right to own land! Why should some one else have that right exclusive to them? Just because they fly a giant tin can?

i'm not asking for a restructure or anything, but if we are going to be called "mercenaries" then something isn't right. I'm saying that as far as the Eve universe is concerned, dust makes no sense. it doesn't fit into anything that CCP has developed in their universe dynamic or lore. |

This is the problem with EVE. It's the reason why EVE is increasingly become stale and uneventful for anything other than helping coalitions sit on their property. It's even worse due to lack of interest ATM for DUST by EVE players.
Huh, allow player base to take over the game world. Player meta groups take over the game. Everyone else kicks the tires and moves on. Who'd a thunk! |

Then would you agree that not having land would put more focus on mercenary skill, teamwork, and reputation rather than the stagnant land hoarders?

Dust-side Corps should be On-Call Platoons. Not miners. Not assembly workers. Not slumlords. Hired killers.
Wiki: A mercenary is a person who takes part in an armed conflict, who is not a national or a party to the conflict and is "motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party". |

Eventually we'll get there. For now, it's just baby steps as CCP tries its best to fix the mistakes they made during release. Balancing issues will take priority first. |

Mercenary is a person who will, to put it as simply as possible, fight other people's fights for money. I don't see the big difference in whether this means he's supposed to attack someone/something or defend it. If he's getting paid to do it, and has no other motive to do it, he's a mercenary.
That being said, EVE and DUST do indeed need a much more intense and meaningful link. If done properly, it would enrich both games, and create a truly unique gaming universe. |
