First off let me say this is not a complaint thread, but a sincere suggestion on how we should make SP MORE relevant than it is now, and draw less focus from the gear itself.
Why do this? You ask. Well the answer is quite simple.
Firstly, it retains the SP requirements to gain 'better potential' for your gear. SP sunk into Assault Rifles will still make you better with Assault Rifles. Thus giving you something to continue to strive for.
Secondly, it allows for the introduction of customizable weapons. I've discussed the imbalance of customization under the current variant system in other threads, but a base outline is that opening modifications of sights, magazines, etc. with variants in place will only strengthen the 'abused' variants, or make certain variants the ONLY one's worth customizing.
First step of this idea would be to scrap the 'Basic / Advanced / Prototype Model. It's horrid gear-based mechanic that rewards two-fold for SP invested. (Prototype gear benefiting MORE from SP invested than Advanced or Basic). Set everything at the level of say Advanced for ease of this outline. As an example, I'll use the Caldari Suit line, but the idea could just as easily be applied to any suit line.
Quote:Caldari Medium Frame I - V
C1-Series L Logistics based Medium Frame 2% Bonus to Shield Enhancer Efficiency per level
C1-Series A Assault based Medium Frame 2% Bonus to Shield Recharge per level
C1-Series E Electronic Warfare Frame 2% Bonus to effectiveness of Radar Jammer Equipment per level
As you can see above, each suit has a different bonus, each linked to one skill (Caldari Medium Frame). Thus the SP invested is what makes your suit better, not the gear level itself.
Once you hit Caldari medium Frame V, you then gain access to 'specialist' Suits based off the prior variants. Each one with it's own Skill Line with another bonus attached.
Quote:Caldari Assault Frame 2% Bonus to Shield Enhance Efficiency per level (linked to the Caldari medium Frame Skill, so you will gain the full 5 stacks of this as soon as you step into the suit.) 1% Bonus Damage to Missile-based Weapons per level (linked to the Caldari Assault Skill)
Quote:Caldari Logistics Frame 2% Bonus to Shield Recharge per level (linked to the Caldari medium Frame Skill, so you will gain the full 5 stacks of this as soon as you step into the suit.) 2% Bonus to repairs from your Repair Tool (linked to the Caldari Logistics Skill)
The bonuses themselves quoted above are just examples and not suggestions in their own right. The idea being that the 'Second Level' Frames are better than the base frames only by being more specialized.
Future iterations could be the Cloaking Suit.. a Second Tier Variant on the Scout Suit that can fit the Cloaking device without some penalty (ie movement speed), while any other Dropsuit that fits it would be reduced to 50% speed and no running while using it.

Seems like a complete overhaul of the current dropsuit mechanics is the only way to go. What about ISK prices, if every suit is basically the same suit does that mean we always make money?
And people who have heavily specced into the current tree to they get a respec, does this idea add more skills and thus a bigger SP sink?
What I like about it is that a suit is only better than another suit by a small % not a huge difference. |

What I like about it is that a suit is only better than another suit by a small % not a huge difference. One thing to note is that we still need different frames if CCP is going to continue to match the total slots of suits, for example you can't run a logistics suits with the same frame as an assault suit, because the assault frame doesn't have the EQ slots required. If CCP stopped trying to balance the amount of slots and applied this they should apply a bonus to the "Caldari Logistics Frame" skill to give one EQ slot at levels 3, and at level 5 that equates to 3 EQ slots.
The ISK prices will vary based on the frame... base frames will all cost the same (under current NPC market) and T2 Frames would cost more. So long as you don't lose suits constantly through a battle, you'd gain money.
People who've already specced into the current tree would most likely require a respect to rebalance SP distribution, since the Base Frame Dropsuit Skill would require you to be at level 5, not the current level 3. And in reference to the 'does this add more skills, it will in the long term.
Base Frame - Specialist Frame One - Separate Skill - Specialist Frame Two - Separate Skill - Specialist Frame Three - Separate Skill
You could even have AV Specialist Suits that get a bonus to their Racial AV Weapon's Damage. ie. Caldari get bonus to Swarm Launchers in Light, Forgeguns in Heavy.
Gallente get racial bonus to Plasma Cannon in Light, and whatever they'll get as a 'Heavy Weapon for AV'.

Hmm.
Having One suit, and having Skill be the difference between tiers?
Genius.

At the very least this an interesting idea. I do enjoy tier's though. I would also like multi perquisite suits, it could open up the game for more variation. Ex. Caldari shielded scout requires shields 3 light frame 2 and caldari suits 1 but it gives +5% sheilds and 1% movement speed something like that would work well with you idea, but also allow deeper specialization and a place for your hard earned sp |

The primary issue with the current tier suits is it doubly rewards each SP invested, triple for 'specialized' suits.
Proto > Advanced > Standard > Militia (Suits at least)
That in itself is pretty straight forward. But each tier level also benefits more than the previous from other skills, widening the gap between gear by a huge amount more than should be. More PG for the Advanced Suit Compared to the Standard, means the Advanced Suit gets more out of each fitting skill.
Whereas some would call this 'synergy' I would label it as a matter of course where the newer players are competing against 'god-like' enemies at almost every turn.
Also the fact that Base Frames have nothing unique about them. Why would you use a Base Frame? The ONLY reason at the moment to use Base Frames is that you don't have the SP to get the better frames yet.
Under this system, the 'Base Frames' get a bonus, and a generalised role (they may lean one way or another, but are fairly general and capable in an all-round sense) then once you've got them mastered, that would equal specialist suits, which are more expensive, and have more role specific bonuses... frontline combat bonuses for the 'Soldiers', Sniper Bonuses for the Snipers, Stealth Bonuses for Recon, so on and so forth. |
