Uh, let me guess. 'Cause they don't know what they are doing?
Yep, that is what I am going with.
Basic RPG rules would indicate that most play sessions (a week down here in the DUST) should reward the player with Something Worth Having. Which DUST does well enough initially. Once you are at lvl 3 for nearly anything every experience takes on a much more dreary outlook.
How about a simple race drop suit solution, expand for all four races.
(Race base) lvl 1 - allows basic assault, scout or heavy. lvl 2 - allows basic logistics (two equip slots) lvl 3 - targeted assault, targeted logistics, heavy specialties (STD level suits) lvl 4 - enables ADV lvl 5 - enables PROTO
Additional SP is required for the following (expand for all suit types)
Assault lvl 1 - standard slots, low cpu/pg lvl 2 - standard slots, med cpu/pg lvl 3 - more slots, med cpu/pg lvl 4 - more slots, high cpu/pg lvl 5 - max slots, max cpu/pg
This is just an example but the entire Skill Tree should be structured more like this. Adding specific race based suits, weapons and vehicles would all just tie in easily as art and animations are completed. I would also have race specific weapons but not restrict race weapon to race suits or character definitions but Skills as now.
Racial bonuses would be minimal but measurable. Although every single racial bonus should have a counter measure. Much of the OP problems CCP/Shanghai has instigated is because they drop some stupid idea in (Flaylock pistol) that has no possible counter measure (two or three hit kills to a Heavy from 58m).
What CCP/Shanghai doesn't know can fill an encyclopedia but specifics on the FPS and RPG aspects appear to have never been understood. RPG fans will get demoralized when they realize that the lvl 4 of most skills require two weeks of playing to have any hope of getting there. With Boosters some can be done weekly. But when you have a lvl 1 logistics fit you realize that you have 2+M SP needed to get even with the PROTO gear you are currently losing (badly) to there is not a lot of hope nor much reason to keep invested in the game. Much less burn down AUR. And there is little to no reward for lvl 2 or lvl 4. lvl 3 Logi to lvl 5 is 1.9M SP. Ouch.
Their knowledge of the FPS world is also limited but there are more knowledgeable than myself for that side of the puzzle. I know that playing DUST is not nearly as much fun as Borderlands. That is enough for me.
I have several routes I could try to see if they were fun, I won't because I cannot respec SP or a portion of SP or use SP temporarily to see if Scramble Rifles were worth the SP. So I don't. Doing the math on getting to lvl 5 for just a few of my goals means I am going to spend months of grinding before I see the results.
Sorry, but this is just a game. And not a great game at that. It is still 5.5/10, up from 5/10 at Uprising 1.0. |
