This happened to me just now. I share it as a cautionary tale.
I was up on a relatively high hill. I had just "retired" some guy below me, in a medium suit, I think. Technically, he was "on a hill", but it was kinda a low-ish hill, comparatively speaking.
He must have got a good directional marker from the damage, so he comes looking for me with a sniper rifle immediately after.
So here's the thing.
First off.. he comes running towards me. RIGHT BACK TO HIS SAME SPOT, more or less Umm.. don't do that. ever.
Secondly.. he had a sniper rifle. Why was he trying to get closer to me??
Thirdly.. okay, he was "above" other people.. but from my perspective, it was like he was running across a flat plain. A flat plain with nice big white snowdrifts, so he stood out like a rabbit in a coyote festival. Straight towards me. DONT DO THIS!!!
"Finally".. figuratively and literally..
So, he's running towards me. He knows Im there. He gets so close to me (100m? 150m?) he has to actually see me, surely? He has to see I'm *looking at him*. Crouched. Scoping him, just watching him. Thinking to myself, he's really not that stupid, is he? I can just let him be, right? ... Nope. Keeps running dead towards me (ahem). While I have him in my scope the entire time. The only thing you can do that's WORSE than running directly away from a prepared enemy... is run directly towards him.
And then he crouches, to "get revenge' on me. Needless to say, I took the headshot.
Thanks for crouching for me! Made it muuch easier to line up the shot.

boasting would be 'WOAH, I TOTALLY WASTED THIS GUY I RULZORZ!!LULZ"
Educational is "here are things not to do".
Those who can be educated, can learn from that.

"nope", I didnt point out 6 things, or "nope", you cant be educated?
All from my prior post:
- Comes back to same spot
- Closes distance even though he has sniper rifle
- Comes across flat land
- Comes across snow
- Comes STRAIGHT towards me, instead of the key "no straight lines" mantra
- Could have seen me ready and aiming towards him, should have given up
- On top of everything, crouches.. in the open, flat land, when I'm ready and aming for him, to give me an even easier shot.
That's six points, plus an extra credit bonus.

Do you have any "how-to" counter-snipe ideas/suggestion???
....because "how not to's" are just so counter productive and useless, since you prolly DIDN"T REACH OUT TO THAT GUY AND SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON HIS ACTIONS, instead you came to the forums and made it into a little guide? |

I have a few tips for counter snipers.
Distance is your friend. If you got killed by a sniper, you know (more or less) where they are, but they donGÇÖt know where youGÇÖre going to spawn (unless youGÇÖre redlined). Use cover and corners when youGÇÖre trying to find them. DonGÇÖt cross open fields if you can help it. DonGÇÖt try to kill them near where you died unless you can tank some shots. Spawn further away and slowly make your way to them.
Try not to counter snipe next to a big blob of blues. Snipers are actively looking for reds to kill and you donGÇÖt want any of them next to you when youGÇÖre lining your shots. You will be the easiest kill for the sniper in that situation and the most desired kill to boot.
Try not to use the preferred locations of snipers (rooftops, mountains) when countering them, those are regularly checked by snipers. Use building walls, containers, shadows, CRUGÇÖs, supply depots or even LAVGÇÖs as your cover. LAV is also a fantastically quick getaway, if youGÇÖre spotted. And learn the sniper hotspots on any map; it will make it easier to find them when you can check the most obvious places first.
If you get sniped, you have been seen and must relocate. Find another spot and try again, chances are that your target is still sitting pretty exactly where they were.
When you find your sniper, check their stats from the left of your screen. You need to know the damage your rifle does (at body and head) and from that to know how many shots it will take you to down them. If you think you have time, you can even check the stats after lining your shot to see if youGÇÖre going to get a headshot. If one shot is not enough, be prepared to line your second shot. Most of the time a second headshot is not needed, a body shot will finish them off nicely.
Learn to line your shots fast and consider using the tactical sniper rifle for countering. I might be biased but firing three shots rapidly can in situations be better than having higher damage shots with longer intervals.
If the sniper is not in the redline, the most satisfying kill is always done by sneaking up on them and killing them with any weapon you happen to carry. LAVGÇÖs dropped on their heads or REGÇÖs are probably the funniest though. Most snipers enter this wonderful tunnel vision where they are almost oblivious to anything going on around them so sneaking up on them is not as hard as it sounds. Never head straight for them, always take a wide route around them.
Think through your counter sniper fitting. You donGÇÖt need anything but the starter fit, but itGÇÖs always good to make your own fitting and if possible, with a better rifle than the militia variant. My counter sniper fit is a proto suit with 700 HP, 3 complex damage mods, C15-A tactical sniper rifle, SMG and nades. With the health I can withstand a couple of sniper shots as well as surprise attacks by other infantry, I can defend myself with the SMG and nades while IGÇÖm searching for the pesky sniper. This is my preference, naturally. Scouts are good snipers due to the profile dampening; I just donGÇÖt have any good snipers suits I could use.
Oh, and when you spot a red using a Thale's in the redline, it is your duty to drop an orbital on them

Pshaw. That makes them feel important. Scope them, and if they dont have high totals, headshot them with a militia sniper rifle ;)

There's nothing more satisfying than headshotting a Thale's user but too often it's difficult to do. They hide deep in the redline, most likely headglitching on some mountain, so I never feel sorry to use an orbital on them. |

I got tired of being sniped. Our snipers weren't doing their job so i spawned in to counter. Killed the same tower sniper three times in quick succession. Don't respawn and go sit in the same spot.
PS. I finally bothered to get sniper proficiency 3 to use that stack of Thales I've built up. I took it out twice and both times I salvaged three more Thales. I took that as a sign to use them more often. Feel free to drop orbitals. They make me feel special. |

I must be doing something wrong. I once had 6 Thale's. And after the whole ccp doubling wallets with the respecs, I had 3 taken away as part of what ccp said was going to be items that you bought with isk you should not have had. It wasn't all bad though because those 3 rifles were all they took when I spent nearly 20 million isk more than I should have.
Since then, I haven't salvaged another Thale's. I always get HMGs, AV Nades, and Forge Guns of varying quality. |

This doesnt sound like a glitch to me. This sounds like "smart sniper, sniping from cover".
and btw, the obvious solution to that, once you find him, is go drop a dropship on his butt. You could do it figuratively, or even literally. A militia barebones dropship is "only" 68K :D

I cannot fly those things to save my life
Sure, every now and then in a boring red line match I go all the way back to the initial spawn area and call my mighty Viper down from the heavens. Then proceed to crash all 5 I normally keep stocked and traipse back to the action invigorated and a little ashamed. |

lolol...
not that great myself... I think the trick is that you have to expect to move slowly. Get very high... then tip forward a LITTLE bit.. for about 2 seconds... then level out very gently, but you'll continue to coast... then wait for 5 minutes until you get to where you want to go.
I think crashing rapidly, comes from attempting to MOVE rapidly :D
o course you're very vulnerable to AV during that time, so you probably want to start a little closer to your objective than "the other side of the map" ;-) |

I go to our red line to hide from peopleGǪ ItGÇÖs bad enough that I keep crashing my dropships, no need to give the enemy free points and a good laugh
Plus, if I tried to fly them closer to the enemy, some poor blueberries might jump in thinking they are safe from harm with me.

^^ I like to point out that chosen drop suit color does matter in my opinion. You can use background color to basically camouflage your suit as long as you don't silhouette yourself. Snow, shadows and reddish backdrops work great for this.
Also, recently noticed what a pain targeting snipers sitting near installations is due to the overlapping target box. Makes picking out the target very hard when combined with mentioned color camouflage. |

It does, all the time, to me at least. So long as you're not predictable, you can run in plain view at the sniper and they will most likely miss. And the closer you are the harder it is for them to line their shots due to the slow rotation speed while ADS. Most snipers even miss when I'm ADS and shooting them at distance |
